According to U.S.N&W.R., Clemson has an undergraduate enrollment of 22,566 and Syracuse has an undergraduate enrollment of 15,421. It is not like Clemson has four times the student population like a B1G state school might have. Other than the administration and alumni having different priorities, there is no reason why we can not support the program similar to Clemson.
Who is “we”? The biggest differentiator is non-alumni fan bases. Clemson had huge outreach to non-alums starting with IPTAY in 1934. Syracuse had an AD tell local fans Syracuse was a one horse town, and locals just needed to suck it up and deal with a crap product because it was the only option.
The result is Clemson has a MASSIVE non-alumni fan base, while Syracuse has a piddly one. If we could roll the clock back 40ish years and not have administrations hostile to athletics and dismissive of locals concerns - we might be in a position to compete with a Clemson now. As it is, I don’t think it’s realistic we can ever catch up.
