Babers to Arizona OC/QB Coach

Meh. You try to give your coach competitive resources if you want to win. Not doing so sets everyone up for failure. Would he have capitalized on them? There was a time I would have said yes. Looking back, once Sean Lewis left I think the answer is no.

Fran (I know, a little off topic) is a different animal than just about any other coach. He creates his own resources and makes the AD want to jump on board. I don't know that I would saddle any other coach to be like him. We need to enjoy him while we can.
Enjoy him while you can and when we get beat by 35 today. Unreal.

This is also Pitt we are playing today not some juggernaut

I know I remember seeing Babers on TV as an analyst when he was our coach, might have been the 2019 College Football Championship. At the time he got rave reviews on this board. So the idea he’ll be terrible is just sour grapes over how he did post-2018 here.

Some of the lingering bitterness fans have about him is 100% on Dino. While complaining he didn’t have resources was legitimate - there’s also a time and place for it. He didn’t always use the best judgement on picking time and place. I recall reading comments he made in an interview after he’d been hired by Arizona taking shots at Syracuse. Prior to that I had some sympathy for Dino since a lot of issues he ran into at Syracuse were outside of his control. But his need to continue taking shots at Syracuse turned me off to him; he’s got a flawed disposition where he takes everything too personally in my opinion. That’s not ideal.

He’ll probably do OK as an analyst. Overall we’re in a better place when he left than when he was hired. But he’s still a schmuck.

I wonder how many 35 point losses it’ll take for Brown to slide off the candidate list for Penn State. Living in PA I know a lot of folks asked me about Brown this week, so they’ll likely pay some attention to the game today. Since Penn State badly needs to win the press conference with this hire, I think the number of 35 point losses it will take for him to be disqualified is 1. Especially if that one is today.

I agree with everything you mentioned 100%.
Sean Lewis was obviously what Dino was counting on when he said "open your eyes"

Don’t you have to be on the list to fall off of it?

If you look at the facilities and size of the support staff now vs. two years ago I am not sure he was wrong.

Good point. Never really considered this either. More people (Alum, donors, school) have bought into Fran. Was it a matter of just personality, vision, university support, or a combo of these...

The way some talk about Dino you think he was grob... He got us to back to back bowls in last two years, was he great, no, but he did get the program stabilized and watchable.

Its baffling to see the persistence of the "nattering nabobs of negativism", who take every opportunity to isht on Dino.
Again, he left us better than when he got here, including some of the most important veteran contributors to our success last year. Not saying that's nearly enough to give him a pass, but it's certainly not the debacle that some of the moobs in our fan base like to focus on.
JMHO.

I hope we don't judge a coach by a few games and without context. More estabished programs than ours have had a season go down the tubes when they lost their QB. In the big picture, do you think Fran is failing?

I didn't see comments of him taking shots at SU. I saw him mention the weather. He's hardly the first to do that. There's a reason many more people retire to Florida and Arizona than NY.

Were there other comments I didn't see?

Yeah. It certainly seems like all of the above. It seems some steps were made under Dino but the mometum has picked up a lot with Fran.

I hear almost every alumni contributor say how glad they are to be welcomed back into the fold of the program after being given the cold shoulder for so long.

I feel like Dino never embraced recruiting locally, and after 2019, recruiting fell off and never recovered. We had California targets and Hawaiian recruits. Many of those recruits that everyone is saying were contributors last season were area recruits. Also, he seemed to ignore the trenches.

I don’t hate the guy, and loved what he brought initially, but losing Lewis had a HUGE impact, and I think he left us almost exactly where he found us. He had a good first two years with a lot of Shafer recruits, mixed in some good transfers, put a good emphasis on S&C, but then lost that too.

Yeah…I’m not remotely interested in looking up what he said in context, but do recall the “he just talked about the weather” take a lot of Babers apologists here wanted to sell stripped the context away. But if that’s how you want to remember the comments - as just innocuous comments about the weather - feel free to do so. I don’t really care enough to argue about it.

Dino obviously didn’t get the resources that Fran gets now, but there is no excusing how he went from this gambling/gungslinger guy in his first three years to a safe and boring guy who looked like he lost his passion, coincidentally right after he got extended. Yeah he left it better than when Shafer got canned but Shafer sucked and was not head coaching material

Any shred of Dino success = DUNGEY
The 2018 team had some dudes beyond Dungey. Two guys with double digit sacks, good WRs and RBs, a decent OL, a freshman All American in Cisco, a Groza Award winning kicker. Dungey was awesome but he didn’t do it alone that year. 2016-2017 was mostly him

Certainly there was some talents on that team besides Dungey, but if you put Collins in for Dungey, that's a two win season lol
