I was floored that they threw it on third down and went out of bounds. That was the break we needed.

Yes, I thought that was the smart play too. Also glad they had confidence in the D (and BC tried to get tricky on 3rd down and it bit 'em in the butt).

Here's something I didn't get, not sure if it's a newer speed the game up type rule, or if I just never noticed all this time (which I'll admit is really sad). They go out of bounds on 3rd down with 2:25 left. Clock stops. Then they set the ball for the FG, ref blows the whistle, and the clock starts running. BC snapped about 14 seconds later, so after the FG there is 2:08 left on the clock. I thought it would have just stayed at 2:25 until they snapped the ball?

Here was another clock management issue...

During Hunt's "spike" first down shuffle, the clock never stopped. Rather than stopping to move the sticks, we probably lost about 8-10 seconds.

Out of bounds only stops the clock completely when it is less than 2 minutes to go each half.

In Shafer's press conference, he seemed to imply that letting the other team score is fine in the NFL but not in college (it's a bad lesson to teach kids to quit on anything). Another reason to love HCMFSS.

My hunch was there was enough time to try to stop them but it was close

The two biggest plays of the game were that pass play that went OB and stopped the clock when we had no TOs left and the long pass to Funder to get us out of the hole and rolling.

I have to admit that when Hunt threw the interception, I turned off the TV. I knew we could still be in the game even with a BC touchdown, but I just couldn't watch. I thought we played great most of the game and then had that forced throw for the TD to sink the season. I was disgusted. However, I couldn't help myself and turned it back on just in time to see BC kick a fieldgoal with more than 2 minutes left in the game. I couldn't believe it. Luckily, I have it on DVR so I can watch the part I missed.

It all depends on the TO situation and we had TO's so didn't have to. It actually worked in our favor once they got that first down and we had 2 TO's left because they wouldn't really be able to run out clock since it was goal to go. By using our 2 TO's the most they could do was run the clock once or get in the endzone obviously and we'd have close to 2 mins either way.

If they had ball back at 30 or 40 or not got the first down inside the 10 on that first play then they would have been able to run clock out by making us use TO's then possibly getting first down and ending it. Obviously we could have got them to go 3 and out and they may not have even gotten field goal try. My feelings were that I felt better about us having to score a TD than depend on Norton (even though he did make 2 long ones earlier) where I could see our O getting conservative and play for a field goal around 25 yard line and end up missing to end game.
