Bell and Cuffe

Before the season started it was said on this board that it was more important to keep Bell instead Malik.
Well with hindsight we’d all flip the two. Malik would be helping us tremendously defensively and we’d utilize him more on O than Duke is. Granted it’d be Malik at center over Eddie, which I’d also be fine with.

My reaction to a bench guy on a 9-9 team having some issues with playing time or whatever

Well this will go counter to most everything else that gets said on the topic and I am not disputing the complaints and observations of other posters, but I have thought Bell has been getting frozen out by some of his teammates. Too many times the pass has not gone to him and I have thought why did X not pass to Bell, but then again, a lot of his teammates regularly make the wrong pass or more frequently make it too late or too slow.

We... don't seem to be great at getting guys the ball in general.

JJ works because he starts the possession with the ball.

Everyone else it seems we really need to want to get them in position to score.

I had heard a rumor earlier this year that one of the main reasons Cuffe was getting very limited playing time was one of the other players was adamant he didnt deserve the minutes. That others deserved his time. At the time, I took no notice (why the hell would Red care anyways) but based on what we just saw with Bell, you have to wonder. I could seriously imagine him pulling crap like that.
What? You heard one of the main reasons Cuffe didn't get minutes is because a player (Bell) told Red he doesn't deserve minutes? And Red obeyed?

1) I can concur with OiG above, the offense isn't built to get good shot opportunities. It's generally set up for scorers to score and then everyone else can fight over the O-rebound.

2) Bell doesn't get the ball that often because that shot is going up and it's not going back out regardless of how good of a shot it is. He has 43 assists in his SU career. He has 628 FGA for a 6% ratio of assists to FGAs. For a guy who has only 18 offensive rebounds in his career, he is exceedingly reliant on others to set him up.
JJ has a 14% assist to FGA ratio. So let's look at other recent SU SFs:
Buddy had a 17% ratio (264 assists to 1520 FGAs)
Elijah had a 19% ratio (159 assists to 833 FGAs)
Brissett had a 11% ratio (95 assists to 832 FGAs)
Andrew White had an 8% ratio (38 assists to 451 FGAs) Probably most similar to Bell's role. White also had 28 O-rebounds in his one season at SU.
Lydon had a 19% ratio (111 assists to 584 FGAs)
Malachi had a 19% ratio (77 assists to 412 FGAs)
Southerland had a 9% ratio (68 assists to 724 FGAs) another most similar to Bell's role. Dirty had 95 O-rebounds in his career, 33 in his Jr season.
CJ Fair had a 9% ratio (119 assists to 1367 FGAs). Kind of surprised by this one, thought CJ passed more. Had 266 offensive rebounds, lots of putbacks though and only 178 3pt FGA.
K-Joe had a 19% ratio (208 assists to 1094 FGAs).

What I saw briefly was that Bell was making a run. Cuffe got a nice steal and was starting to look up to pass the ball. Got Fouled. Bell had a 3rd grade tantrum by punching his fist in the air and walking away with stiff arms at his side. While Cuffe was at the free throw line, he was attempting to make eye contact with Bell. Bell walked back up the court (past Cuffe) and turned his head the other way. That is why we have the

NO MORE (COW)BELL LOOK

I watched it several times. Cuffe was definitely fouled the moment he had actual control of the basketball. There was not time to pass it to Bell. Good on Cuffe to ignore the drama and sink the two free throws.

mookie jones imo was a much better pure shooter than bell. avg'd a little under 3 attempts per game.
SU cannot afford to have such a spotty shooter who brings nothing else starting.
needs to accept his role as a bench player like the mook martian from planet treyton .

I have no idea who the player was, or even if the rumor was true. Frankly, I would hope that Red wouldn't give a damn what another player thought.
But based on Bells childish actions Saturday towards Cuffe, and the way Red has used Cuffe as a yo yo most of this season, it does give one pause.
I sit in Section 309, a few rows up right behind our bench, and I could see Bells temper tantrum close up. He was so upset that he was literally talking to himself and anyone else that got near enough to listen.
He is such a diva, why he has such an inflated opinion of himself is beyond me.

Whoa. These stats are absolutely mind blowing.

18 O rebounds in his career?! 43 assists?!?!

The second most mind blowing thing is that this staff thought Bell could be a guy to build a team around. The third most is that a ton of people here thought it was also a good idea.

I don't believe any part of that story. No one cares what Bell thinks. And Bell came right out of the game after his little fit on Saturday.

As harsh as I've been on Red, I would be very surprised if he was actually letting one player dictate another's PT that way.

So did a ton of people not on this board before this season started. Are you saying you saw this train wreck before the beginning of this year?

I was very confident that Bell was not a guy to build around. Because he’s a 3 point shooter who literally does nothing else well.

*edited to add* I posted this in the second half of the LeMoyne game thread. So that would make it the first game of the season.

“I’ll be honest, if we’re expecting Bell to be the guy it’s not gonna be a good year.”
