Ben Simmons blasts the NCAA..

If I was Ben Simmons, I go to the CBL and bank that money along with the 20 million dollar shoe deal he got and get it a year early. LSU did nothing for Simmons for a year.

No 20 million shoe deal if he goes overseas. The biggest impact playing in college for a year for a guy like Simmons is it increases his endorsement potential by a factor of 10-20x. Some company will sign him just to get him under contract, but that one year in the NCAA will allow his agent to ask for a an enormous amount more.

I disagree. Simmons gets that deal without LSU. He really didn't up his value when he was there.

I don't disagree that he didn't help his draft status. Just his endorsement value. How much did Dante Exum sign in endorsement deals? His Adidas contract was 60% less than Simmons was.

Are we comparing Ben Simmons to Dante Exum? Simmons should fire his agent only getting 60% more.

We will never know, but the exposure he had on ESPN and through other sports media made him a name to the casual fan that never heard of him before he was in college. That's where his endorsement value increased IMO.

He didn't make the tournament, his team stunk and he really didn't have a sexy season. He had not quite LeBron type hype before college but most NBA fans knew who this guy was before his college career.

I wouldn't say most. Too much credit to the knowledge of the casual fan, pro or college. And although one couldn't disagree with ease of your take on his year in the Bayou, it has to be said that regardless of that fact his name was in print and video highlights constantly, and somehow had a bad LSU squad seemingly on everyone's bubble until near the end (which was a joke. Thanks, Lunardi). That wasn't happening in prep school.

I think you might be proving my point. Dante Exum was a projected top 5 pick in the NBA draft who chose not to go to college. He signed an Adidas contract at 18 that was rumored to be five years for 1.5 million (it's a bad sign when agents are hush hush on the numbers). He was picked 5th in the draft.

Ben Simmons was a projected top 3 pick in the NBA draft who chose to play college ball. He played well individually but his team didn't make the tournament. He signed a Nike contract at 19 for five years for 7.5 million. He was picked first in the draft.

Dante made approximately 4.5mm playing pro ball for two years (600k endorsements + 250k australian league + 3.6mm NBA).

Ben Simmons will make 8.9mm playing i year NCAA and 1 year NBA (3mm endorsements + 5.9mm NBA).

Excluding the argument that playing in the NCAA helps in NBA draft value, I think that Exum could have made twice as much money in one year with Adidas if he played in the marketing machine that is NCAA mens basketball. This is not taking into account the effect on long term earnings, just the first two years of earning potential.

And on a personal note, I don't have much sympathy for the top 1% feeling under compensated. Especially when they have other choices. And even more especially when they use college to improve their money making ability, which in theory is part of what college is supposed to be all about. And most of all because it allows the other 99% of college athletes go to college for free.

He's not really blasting the NCAA for making him go to school for a year, he's blasting them for not paying him (enough). That's a totally fair complaint.
These high caliber players will always feel it is never enough...Agents in their ears will want a cut of something.

If high profile student athletes took their one year in college more seriously they would stand a better chance of not being broke after their career ends.

There should be a "one and done" curriculum consisting of the following classes:
Macro and micro Econ
Finance
Marketing
Intro to Business and/or Contractual Law
Health & Nutrition Science
Public Speaking

Logic is typically a mid to upper level math class. I'm guessing not too many one and dones would have the prerequisites.
I'm not talking about math related logic. Simply logic as it relates to understanding and explaining issues in a clear and knowledgeable manner.

Right, the 100-level philosophy class.

It could also come in handy in the NCAA sanctions thread.

Now that I think of it, the NCAA could stand a class in logic themselves.

I couldn't agree with this more. Every school should have an athletic curriculum program for their underclassmen. It should provide skills they would need when they turn pro as well as a solid base of classes that would allow them to move on and get degrees in something else if they wind up staying all four years.
