Benny is back

I struggle to find anything but spot minutes for Benny right now. There's no justification for playing him over Maliq, Justin or Quadir unless they do something dumb and need to come out. We could use Benny's help on the defensive glass but he'd need to be cool being the 3rd/4th option on offense and I don't think I'm there.
Maliq hasn't been playing well due to being hurt. With Benny back, perhaps we can sit Maliq against Colgate to allow him to heal and be prepared for Tennessee when we will really need him.

I always got the feeling Benny is extremely coachable, unlike some of our good-headcases over the years.

Last year when he scored, it felt a bit too movie-scripted until late in the season. He didn't score many effortless points, so you would remember all his buckets. However, he also began showing flashes of solid outings in assists and ball movement mid-season, which can be easy to miss if you were not anticipating or watching the replay. I am super excited to see how those two things mix into this year's offense, not sure what to anticipate.

Can't wait to see what Red has planned for defense this year.
i agree...i think the team relly really needs what he brings if they want to be a legit threat this year

Anyone heard rumors about why he was suspended or better yet does anyone actually know why?

Just wanted to post in a dedicated thread without starting a new one-

Benny was really, really good today. A few blunders, yes. But look at that statline and where he was in crunch time - out on the floor and not on the bench.

I am not high on this team. However, if they can get Benny to play like this Benny, that changes things. It gives us a guy that can guard the other teams 4. It also gives us a guy that can hit a 3 (even though he didn't today). This Benny gives me hope.

I think Benny will have games like this, but will also throw in a lot bad ones as well. Ideally he will embrace this bench role, stay focused, and produce more of the former.

What gives me much hope for this team is that Brown and Copeland look like they can be consistent impact players off the bench and log starters minutes. Red seems to have many options with this roster and is willing to use them.

I know hes playing better in the limited role but he'd really round out our starting lineup well next to Bell and Taylor might have an easier time scoring off the bench.
Bennie has finally arrived. A true high flyer. Our second unit is sick. Big measuring stick at Duke. Hope to see growth from earlier games against good teams.

I wanna see Benny get more chances from 10 feet and in - postups, 1 on 1s...he was playing above the rim at times today and looked good inside the arc...

maybe he can be a good option at the free throw line next time a team throws zone at the Orange.

Benny playing like this allows Red to play two bigs when the matchup/game flow dictates. If he can shoot well enough from deep to be a threat (he's 2-12 since hitting a pair against Tennessee) it should really open things up for Maliq and our drivers.

I love seeing the improvement from him. Kudos to both him and the staff for figuring it out.

Is he comfortable in the post? I'm not sure I've seen him post up. He seems to like that 2-3 dribble drive and pull up. Not everyone that has the size and physical ability has taken the time to learn a post game, especially in today's game.

You mentioned Blunders By Benny, but one of his plays that resulted in a turnover was quite hopeful.

Williams aggressively pulled down a defensive rebound off a failed Pitt fast break, turned and immediately launched a pass up court to a (cherry picking?) Mintz. Williams airmailed it through the back of the end zone, but I was impressed with his quick decision and desire to get the outlet pass up court immediately.

That's the kind of play that will result in many more baskets than turnovers if he keeps his head in that space... Much better than when he tries to dribble after rebounding.

I wish they tried to take advantage of Williams' shooting ability more often. He would be perfect setting the screen in the pick and roll, as he can be a threat to dive to the basket or pop to the three point line. I don't know why they haven't used that so far.

Great point and 100% agree

whatever he needs to get the ball and shoot in the interior...he can turn and face if he has to (thats more his game)

just dont wanna see him hanging out around the arc passive

That play, and in the 2nd half when he looks at a long 3 in a secondary break situation, and didn’t shoot. That was big.
