Best Stat of the week

3rd down conversion, red zone conversion and penalties are the best stats that help translate to better competition. I know we did great in 3rd down and penalties. I don't remember how we did in the red zone but I'm sure it wasn't bad.

3rd down conversions 11 of 19, just under 58%.

That really is excellent. The team was so awful on 3rd down last year.

That's encouraging regardless of who they were playing.
they were awful on every down last year

they were 110th in 3rd down conversion and they were 111th in yards per play last year.

Wow, who knew?

People in the industry seem to think it's an important part of the game.

The ability to execute at key moments of the game and make plays that extend drives is very important.

It's only worth paying attention to for the rare teams that are good on first and second down but somehow choke when a ref holds a stick with a three on it.

i will continue to be amused at how much you care about this stat over useful ones

Yes GOSU96. Stop paying attention to useless plays that extend drives. They mean nothing.

I will continue to be amused at how confident you are that you think you know what you are talking about.

23 total first down which my expert math skills tells me we had 12 first downs prior to 3rd down as well. 3rd down conversion is great, only needing 1 or 2 downs to get 10 yards is even better.

Flip side, being that I am a defense guy, is holding Rhode Island to 1-11 or 3rd down and only 2 first downs total. That is amazing regardless of whom you're playing and at what level. Our 2nd and 3rd string defenders didn't let up on what the 1st string had accomplished.

RI = 2.9 yards per pass attempt, 0.2 yard per rush attempt
SU = 5.4 per pass, 5.4 per rush

Tangent warning:

Would like the per pass to be a bit higher and if AC doesn't drop that TD and Dungey doesn't just miss that shot over the middle it is but the play calls were there and the QB made solid throws. Looked like the incompletion over the middle the receiver MAY have rounded off his route a bit. Even if Dungey missed the throw it wasn't by much and the positive on that was he threw they guy open. When he released the ball the receiver was still in front of 3 defenders whom our freshman qb still felt confident knowing it was going to there. This bodes will moving forward since, against better defenses, if you wait til a window is open to throw it that window is already closing. With Deuce taking the first team reps moving forward the down field timing/confidence should only improve.

Sounds like Michigan numbers from last year.

Also, 4 yards total rushing allowed while playing the 3 deep for 1/3 of the game is really good no matter who your playing.

Tells you a bit about our depth. It's nice to know, if nothing else, our 3rd string and even some walk ons, are now better than a bad Rhode Island team. In the not too distant past our first string was struggling with them.

Old School thinking: We have to get in position to have 3rd and short.

Modern thinking: I have 4 plays to get 10 yards. Hopefully it won't come to the 3rd or the 4th, but if I can't average 2.5 yards per play then I have bigger problems.

So passing efficiency should correlate with third down efficiency, right?

I'll take third down efficiency - it can be demoralizing for a defense to constantly fail to get off the field.

And it can boost the confidence of the offense - it seems to me.
it's a terribly noisy predictor. if you fail every third down in a game, you will lose that game. so people think it's important. but it doesn't predict anything about how good you actually are. just like leaving 10 guys on base doesn't predict that you are a bad hitting team.

florida state and ga tech had fewer third down plays than we did last year. pretty amazing, considering we had 10000 consecutive 3 and outs
