3 for 3 and 2 for 3tds3rd down conversion, red zone conversion and penalties are the best stats that help translate to better competition. I know we did great in 3rd down and penalties. I don't remember how we did in the red zone but I'm sure it wasn't bad.
they were awful on every down last year3rd down conversions 11 of 19, just under 58%.
That really is excellent. The team was so awful on 3rd down last year.
That's encouraging regardless of who they were playing.
they were awful on every down last year
they were 110th in 3rd down conversion and they were 111th in yards per play last year.
It's only worth paying attention to for the rare teams that are good on first and second down but somehow choke when a ref holds a stick with a three on it.Wow, who knew?
People in the industry seem to think it's an important part of the game.
The ability to execute at key moments of the game and make plays that extend drives is very important.
Yes GOSU96. Stop paying attention to useless plays that extend drives. They mean nothing. It's only worth paying attention to for the rare teams that are good on first and second down but somehow choke when a ref holds a stick with a three on it.
i will continue to be amused at how much you care about this stat over useful ones
You guys think that batting average with runners in scoring position matters over timeYes GOSU96. Stop paying attention to useless plays that extend drives. They mean nothing.

Sounds like Michigan numbers from last year.they were awful on every down last year
they were 110th in 3rd down conversion and they were 111th in yards per play last year.
Also, 4 yards total rushing allowed while playing the 3 deep for 1/3 of the game is really good no matter who your playing.
it's a terribly noisy predictor. if you fail every third down in a game, you will lose that game. so people think it's important. but it doesn't predict anything about how good you actually are. just like leaving 10 guys on base doesn't predict that you are a bad hitting team.So passing efficiency should correlate with third down efficiency, right?
I'll take third down efficiency - it can be demoralizing for a defense to constantly fail to get off the field.
And it can boost the confidence of the offense - it seems to me.
florida state and ga tech had fewer third down plays than we did last year. pretty amazing, considering we had 10000 consecutive 3 and outsOld School thinking: We have to get in position to have 3rd and short.
Modern thinking: I have 4 plays to get 10 yards. Hopefully it won't come to the 3rd or the 4th, but if I can't average 2.5 yards per play then I have bigger problems.
