1. 2001 Miami Hurricanes-probably the best team of all-time in modern CFB in my opinion
2. 2013 Florida State Seminoles- won the NC and were a really good team.
3. 2002 Miami Hurricanes- equally as dominant as 2002 but the Luckeyes and that Big XII ref stole their NC.
4. 2008 Penn State Lions- They went 11-1 and were a 1 point loss from playing in the NC game.
5. 2001 Tennessee Volunteers- Haynesworth and Henderson killed our OL that game. This team was good

This LSU team could knock out Tennessee I think.

our 2001 team won the SEC over that 2001 Tennessee team. This team looks to be better than the 2001 team we had.

Probably. There's a bit of a drop from #4 to #5. The first 2 were unanimous national champs, the next 2 were this close. Some of those Pat White WVU teams are probably in the discussion, as well as 2013 Clemson, 2011 USC.

as far as future NFL talent, this LSU team will be 2nd only to the 2001 Miami team

I think 2013 FSU will have a say in that, honestly. But I don't disagree that it will probably be close.

Why settle for 2nd?

We've come this far, let's go all the way!

The 2008 Penn st team was good, but I think they overachieved a bit. I would say this Lsu team is probably 2nd or 3rd on that list.

that 2001 Canes team was the most talented team in NCAA history. We have a long ways to go before we can even be mentioned in the same breath as those guys.

I enjoy threads like this, thanks for starting it. My top five (and I'm not trying to be cute)

1. 2001 Miami
2. 2000 Miami
3. 2002 Miami
<decent sized gap>
4. 2013 Florida State
5. 2007 West Virginia (that team may very well win the national title if not for the most shocking Big East upset ever at home vs. Pitt)

17 1st round picks on that team, 38 NFL draft picks overall. That's almost half their team! I knew that team was fantastic but I looked it up just now and didn't realize that they had that many future draft picks. Crazy.

until we see LSU play a team with a pulse who knows.. Miss St is good, auburn should be 1-2 now and we know what we are, lets see them play 3-4 real SEC games and then say how good they are. they got a great RB after that the qb has shown nothing , if they can run for 400 every game that will be all they need.

Yes. That 2001 Tennessee team struggled on offense if I remember correctly.

Mine would be:

1. The U 2001
2. The U 2002
3. Florida St. 2013
4. LSU current team
5. USC 2011. I'm a bit biased but they won at Oregon, beat UCLA 50-0, etc. About 8 NFL current players on that team.

5. 2007 West Virginia (that team may very well win the national title if not for the most shocking Big East upset ever at home vs. Pitt)
I wouldn't put that team on the list. They were definitely a very successful team, but they did not have the pure talent across the roster as other teams on the list.

Wait LSU has to play someone with a pulse? lulz

URI, Wake, and CMU say hey

I would go with:

1. Miami 2001
2. Miami 2002
3. FSU 2013

4. Miami 2000 - they were a damn good team (ended year #2) and lost a close game at Washington (11-1 #3 final ranking) back when it was very hard to win there. They beat up everyone else on their schedule except FSU (#5 final rank) which was a close victory. VT that year ended #6 as well. Then they beat Florida (final rank #10) in a Bowl. So they played four Top 10 teams that year.

5. VA Tech 2000 - not sure how good they were because they didn't play anyone but Miami. Vick alone puts them on my list though. And they did end the year #6.

It is hard to put some teams up there because they lost too much. But there were some talented teams that could be up there (like 2013 Clemson). Can't just go on record either or you would put undefeated Cincy on the list. If Brian Kelly stayed and they beat Florida in the Bowl they would have ended the year #3 in 2009. I thought of 2005 WV but when SU played them White wasn't the starter so I factored that in.

Wow, LSU has only played two games -- are they really better than 2000 Miami who was just insanely good after their early season close loss at Washington? I mean, LSU could easily go on to lose like 3-4 games this year.

It's illogical to have 2001 Miami as #1 and then not have 2000 Miami in your Top 5, IMO. It's virtually the same well-oiled machine of a team.

It isn't the best indicator of talent but if the college football playoff existed for all of the 2000s these teams would have made it:

2014: FSU
2013: FSU
2009: Cincy
2002: Miami
2001: Miami
2000: Miami
