Big 10 Canceling Football Season

You have to think that all this will eventually lead to the inevitable conclusion of no football this season. Short of a "bubble scenario" a la the NBA, I can't see how this season gets played. The first case of in-season transmission changes the entire outlook for every conference.
Imagine a coupla players test positive after a game- do you keep playing or do you shut it down for yourself, & all opponents your team has played? And do future opponents on your schedule agree to play you knowing your entire team might've been exposed by said infected player?
Seriously, this all seems like wishful thinking to me. I fully expect a few games will be played, but I can't see a whole season based on what we know now.

They keep playing. Next man up is a thing for a reason.

has it been anounced how the 2 tests per week is going to work? one wednesday and one on sunday or do the test right after the game?

The cat is out of the bag. The Big Ten isn't scared of Covid.
They are scared of players unionizing.

The SEC and ACC aren't worried about that it appears.

Thus the Big Ten wanted unanimity so they could it make it appear like this is Covid related.
It will be interesting to see what the Big XII does. That IMO will determine what the SEC and ACC do.
Paul Finebaum stated, in talking to Greg McElroy who is also pushing this, that the B1G Commissioner has been looking for a reason to cancel for months now.

It was a premeditated conclusion looking for justification.

How funny would this be if this led to the demise of the B10 and the top teams looking elsewhere and leaving Rutty on the outside looking in again. What a tease, a doormat for a 4 years, and never once got close to their full share lol

Nice dream, but the B1G isn't going anywhere.

Would be fun seeing that happen to Rutgers, though...

Have to think its pre-game/ post -game. If students maintain their bubble(assuming there is one) Pre game to test for that... Post game to check on travel/other team.

I firmly believe the SEC will play no matter what, when it is clear they decide to play I think the ACC will do its darndest to play. They both will want to make the BIG look bad. TV(and sponsors) will be desperate for new content, and willing to pay a premium for that content. TV revenues have taken a serious hit, and they will open up the checkbook.
Leagues that decide not to play will then realise what a disadvantage they are in. They will decide to instead merely postpone the season start, which the BIG has already had rumblings of doing instead of cancellation.
Most players want to play, not sit out a season. They all know their window for playing is not that big. A lost season can never be made up for.

If the SEC, ACC and NFL get their seasons off without any major hitches, college presidents in the B1G will be looking for new jobs in 2021. Given that the majority of athletic departments were ready to play, they may have created a schism.

The B1G is cancelling their season for convenience, nothing more. The PAC12 followed. Both are simply admitting what everyone knew, neither had a chance to reach the playoffs.

(lighten up my fellow Orange fans, this COVID-19 #$%& is bad enough)

Once the people in Pasadena cancelled the Rose Parade, they had nothing to play for anyways.

Imagine being the Pac-12, cancelling all sports until 2021, and it barely even registers in the sports world..

That's how bad of a job Larry Scott has done as commissioner.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn - Any conference that starts our playing will end up canceling. However, once there is a vaccine this plague will be gone as fast as it came.

:confused:Could this be the year when the ACC gets Notre Dame AND Pedd State both to join in playing league games? Apocalyptic thinking, I know! I heard Greg McElroy on ESPiN talking about Scott Frost's proclaimed defiance leading to Nebraska possibly aligning with the Big XII, Ohio State taking on the $EC, and James Franklin's Sexual Abuse Deniers playing PITT and other ACC foes this season instead of bowing down to the B1G decision to cease competing at all this year. Oh well, I guess we may never know what could have been as the first makings of a superconference emerged when the Fighting Irish had to come down from their independent perch recently and make nice with all us football commoners...

If the ACC is actually going to play then saberrattling the Big Ten wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Offer Penn State if they are interested.
Let Penn State use the pandemic as grounds to get out Big Ten GOR and let the Big Ten try and challenge that.

I doubt Penn State wants in but if Notre Dame and Penn State joined the conference its on par with the SEC.

Bottom line, if you play the season you have to have a certain tolerance for some contraction and transmission. To have expectations that no one is going to contract or transmit is beyond unreasonable. If that's the goal, shut it down now.

If you play, you can only reduce risk not eliminate. And this principle can be applied to all aspects of life. You can only ever reduce, not eliminate

The question is if you play, what is the threshold for contraction and transmission that you are willing to accept?
