Long/Lester is miles ahead of Hunt/McDonald on third downs so far. Hunt has a 96 rating on 3rd down. Long 156. Long is 48% 3rd down conversion percent through the air. Hunt is 24%

Hunt is much better on 1st and 2nd down. I wonder how much play calling matters.

when it's an obvious passing down, Long is better. more accurate, better coordinator. maybe they need to treat first and second more like third. i don't think there's anything magical about third down, i think it's more than long is just better at throwing

Red zone still a big problem. Between the opp 20 and 40, long is 5-6, 2 td, 1 int. 263 rating. in RZ, he's 1 for 9 with a 16 rating. stupid refs ruined that with that horrible pick call so big grain of salt there.

Millhouse...who is having a lot of success in the RZ this year offensively this year? I suppose depending on the team and who they are playing but still I'd like to see what type of offensive systems are having success there.

As for your point on 3rd down it is probably a combo of reads, accuracy and play call.

here's rz td % rankings.

60% correlation between scoring rank and rz td % rank. suprisingly low to me.

baylor is middle of the pack in the red zone believe it or not. they score so many long ones

SMU and Uconn are the only ones worse. Hahaha uconn

I'm cherry picking for optimism, but in the FSU game, the TD pass to Ishmael was snapped at about the 20 and a half yard line. And the throw to Parris earlier was about an inch of his foot from being a TD. I think they just need to keep working at it, and not have to bring in their entire defensive line for the red zone.

Clay Cleveland must have something written in his contract. Gets listed as a starter on the depth chart at fullback. Never sees the field. And when we actually need a fullback, we bring in defensive linemen.

Thanks...interesting and I don't really see a particular type of offense being the right combo for success.

I could see Baylor "struggling" a bit as the field gets shortened and you're right, they take it to the house for all kinds of td's.

i was hoping that points per RZ possession was less terrible, but we're 122nd there.

this is a really weird year. over enough games, yards tell most of the story. but not for us

since we dont have the all 22 view to tell, but we heard some mention from lester and long, just how many reads are being missed? I remember when Hackett used to mention how many times Nassib made the correct call/read. We have heard in both starts Long missing reads, but never heard it discussed much with Hunt. His progressions were bad for a 4th yr player, but still.

Once the play is called , are we checking the proper play for the best chance for it to work? are we then making the correct progression?

you go back to the FSU game, on the first INT, wilson rolled out and threw under the WR for the pick.. No way a more experienced QB makes that throw, and a good QB just throws it over the top to the WR who was 5 yards behind the DB with no safety.

it also seems like the execution kills even the well called plays. 5-6 tds that were easy and the 2-3 called back. Most of those were not play calling issues either. these could all improve even this year as Long throws quicker than hunt and that helps in the RS and also is a bit faster like the one he ran in Sat. hunt cant score on that play.

I wish we had Hunts toughness, Wilsons Arm, and Longs ability to make plays in one body.. but then we would have McNabb back.

Comparing Hunts ability to make reads after 3 years in the program and 15+ starts vs a freshman in his 1st start - is silly. Hunt should be better and often went to the right spot with the ball (although McDonald did mention Hunt missing reads) - he was just inaccurate. Longs moxie and accuracy make up for his youth (so far).
