There will many new faces and unproven players playing pivotal roles for the Orange this fall. In your mind, what position is the biggest concern as we approve spring practice?

For me, it has to be Left Tackle. In '10, we all knew Pugh was going to be the guy. In '13, Hickey was the heir apparent. Two NFL-talent guys manning the blindside.

Now? We have Lasker and McGloster who have taken snaps at LT and haven't shown us much of anything. Does someone else get a chance? I think this is a huge issue that hopefully can be resolved by the time September 5 rolls around.

Would like to see what ward can do at LT because, barring some kind of miraculous improvement, Lasker isn't the guy. He would get beat like a drum out there last year. For me, the safety position is a huge question mark.

With zero insider knowledge, my feeling is that Foy or Robinson will play LT, Palmer will start at either G or RT, Trudo gets a shot at Center, and Aaron Roberts and Alex Hayes fight it out for that 5th spot if Trudo can make the transition. If not, Emerich starts at Center and Roberts/Hayes become our 6th and 7th. So basically, if Lasker gets any run besides on PATs and FGs, I think we're in a world of trouble. Still think Ward and McCloster and Burton are a year away. Ward didnt give me the warm and fuzzies during his recruitment and McCloster and Burton are admittedly projects.

Little off subject but I never understood why we don't use some of the bigger guys on kickoff return. I know the rules were changed taking away the wedge but some of the bigger kids can really run and lay a pounding better than a Ben Lewis, for example.

I will be very surprised if Ward isn't a starting T and think he has the ability to play LT.

QB is the obvious one with the competition between Hunt and Long. My money is on Long personally.

S will be the other concern. Blair has to make it academically.

I think the starting LT might well be determined more by what happens at center than what happens at LT. My guess is that the staff will value experience, try to move Trudo, a very smart and very experienced player, to center. Assuming Trudo can handle snapping in the shotgun formation, that would lead to a starting lineup that looks like this:

LT Foy
LG Hayes
C Trudo
RG Robinson
RT Palmer

You have 4 experienced OL who performed well or relatively well and all are likely to start or at least play a lot. Of all the other backups, I thought Hayes looked the most ready to play/polished of the bunch, hence that is the reason I have him playing before Lasker, McGloster, Roberts or Ward.

My understanding was that the staff tried to put Trudo at center prior to last season. That was plan A. But he was so bad at snapping from the shotgun, they dropped it and went to plan B, where Miller played center and Trudo stayed at OG.

If Trudo can't handle the snapping (I am assuming the new offense will be run from the shotgun quite often), things change. I think this is a good possibility based on what happened last year. In that case, Emerich, Hayes or Duerig will be the center.

Last season Emerich looked undersized and physically overwhelmed. But the same thing happened to Miller his junior year (though it wasn't in real games). He saw he was not ready and worked his butt off to get to where he could play BCS football as a senior and it payed off for him. I hope Emerich is doing something similar this offseason. It will be interesting to see how he looks in spring ball...he is one of the first players I will be checking out.

Anyway, if we assume Trudo can't handle snapping, this is my projected starting OL:

LT Foy
LG Trudo
C Emerich
RG Robinson
RT Palmer

I think it would actually be better for Lasker, McGloster, Roberts or Ward (or Burton or Duerig for that matter) if Trudo gets the nod at center, because if Emerich starts, the Big Four experienced OL are likely going to start with him. If Trudo plays center, it opens a spot at OG or OT for the next best player outside the Big Four.

After saying all that, I think the position with the most concern is free safety. We have an astonishing lack of experience at this key position and a real lack of depth as well. My guess is Williams is going to play SS and Scissum FS but I don't even know that. Hope they start healthy. We have little depth at CB to bring over if one of these guys gets hurt or turns out to be a dud. Pretty confident Williams is going to be a fine player if he can stay on the field though. A couple of frosh are going to play key roles in the secondary on defense this season...that looks like a given.

There are a lot. Don't know how exactly to rank them.

QB, RB, OL, DB, DL, OLB.

I know people have names ready to plug into a lot of the spots, but outside of Thompson and Franklin, I'm not sure who on the defense is really ready. But I do have confidence in the system we use, and the guys running it. So while there might be a personnel hiccup early, I don't expect it to be long term. 8 starters is just a lot to lose, and one of the returning guys, Whigham, really struggled last year.

On offense, the OL needs to be healthy and figure out the Hickey replacement, who was the only consistently healthy performer last year. RB has two guys with experience and some true freshmen to keep an eye on, but we really don't know if it's going to work. As for QB, hopefully Hunt joins our recent trend of senior QBs playing much better than they did any previous year.

CB

Secondary - the entire group. We have a starting QB and 4 veterans to build an OL. The secondary is a big issue.

How many wins do we need to get in order to get Robert Washington committed and stay that way?

In order to get that win total the offense has 3 key question marks, OC, QB and LT. The defense will have 2 key question marks, who else can rush the passer consistently other than Ron Thompson and finding merely average to solid secondary play.

Will

Sam

FS

QB

RB

TE

OC

HC

All are in dire need of some help. Let's figure it out boys.

1988, 1994. Now that's a trend!

It might work the other way. Washington wants to be a difference maker and wants to wear 44. If we give it to him, or at least unretire it so that he can earn it, that may do it.

I am less worried about the defense than I am about the offense. I think by the end of the season we might actually be better at D than last year .

As much as I may have given the impression that I am anti-Lester, I actually think he is probably very competent - I just don't fancy what I think he is going to run. What seems certain is that the entire offense, especially the O Line, are going to have to go through a learning curve. How effective any player will be under the new system may well be different than under the old one. (Run blocking may be more valued than pass blocking etc.)

As I have said before, I suspect that Lester's offense will be Hunt friendly. Based on last year, which may not be a good guide, RB may be far more important and all our backs disappointed behind a banged up O Line. Just don't know what to expect.

RB. Really hoping for someone to step up and be consistent. George and Davante are good, but they can certainly be better. Here's to hoping some of the improvements happen in catching, too. Also, something that we haven't talked too much about is the read-option. I thought Hunt did a pretty good job of this in '13 and little less so in '14, but still knew when to take it himself. I wonder if there'll be any element of that in Lester's O.

Read my mind. I think Lester will make sure Hunt has his plays.

Yes but I'm sure he also wants to win (at least somewhat early on). I think it's feasible to believe he commits to us in March, but if we can't show upward trends on the field and only win 3-4 games, he decides this isn't for him (especially if the staff were to be fired). If he picks us, it's contingent upon us showing some improvement on the field this year so that when he (and all his friends he brings with him, fingers crossed) they can take over the world
