They're good friends, right?

One would think that BOB called Doug to pick his brain about Syracuse, right?

Wonder if that happened and if so, what Doug's response was.

BOB wouldn't call Marrone about syracuse. Would BOB call Marrone if he was going on a date with Marrones ex wife?

My guess is that if BOB did call, which I dont believe he would have Marrone stays out of it. I do believe Doug found out real quickly that he would prefer to be in the NFL but he still loves his Cuse players and alma mater.

Now when Doug is coaching college again in 3 years it may be a different story.

I think Doug has more important things going on right now this close to the season than to talk strategy with this weekend's opponent of his alma mater and the kids he recruited.

Doubt the call happened.

Could not be any more wrong on this one. Why just say stuff like this? Good grief.

Not sure how I could be so far off base. Doug proved himself as a college coach and has a very uphill battle coaching a team that does not have a QB who should be on the field in an NFL game for week 1. The Bills have a recent history that will be difficult to turn around. I am not being a dink just my realistic view. The NFL is a chew them up spit them out type of league. History indicates it is more likely for him to fail than succeed and that has little to do with Doug Marrone

If Doug fails as HC of the Bills, he will stay in the NFL as an OC. He is not coming back to college. That is what I am saying.

Gotcha I don't disagree, but I imagine some college teams would come calling so a decision would need to be made. Although you are right he would probably settle into the NFL.

Recruiting is the biggest difference between college and NFL coaching. Doug wants to coach, not recruit and beg. The NFL offers him that opportunity.

One would also think that BOB would not have to talk to Marrone about scouting SU, let alone risk their friendship.

Put yourself in both of their position.
If BOB asked a close friend to betray the team he coached and played for, he is a classless scumbag. If Marrone revealed anything about SU (and I doubt he would), my opinion of him would be even lower than O'Brien for asking.

I'm willing to bet Doug has at least three years if not four to get things turned around. The talent on the roster is not that bad and if they stink this year because of injuries he gets a pass. Stinking this year actually is not that bad because next years draft is loaded, come on down Mr Clowney.

Head coach in college probably pays better than OC in the NFL. Not so far fetched.

I think Marrone would go coach high school before returning to be a college head coach. Pretty sure he said so himself in an interview and the $ from this Bills contract would allow him to do so, if he didn't want to be an OC or OL coach in the NFL

Not sure that the Bills recent history matters. Marrone has proven to be pretty good at the "culture change" thing. The Bills were not that far off last year. They have some talent, and their division is not that good.

I think, for them it's really all about getting it right at QB. If Manuel is the answer, I see no reason why the Bills can't be a solid team in the coming years.

Marrone would tell him to kick rocks. Just because he left Syracuse doesn't mean he still doesn't bleed Orange and Blue

If you knew Doug, yes it is.
glad I have a chance to catch up with you. You said that recruiting had great mo. Do you think it still does? It seems we have stalled and I'm wondering about your thoughts?

They missed out on a few guys they wanted, the Clemson game will be a big, big day for recruiting. Let's hope they are 4-0. Could get a few commits that weekend.

"Nice try, Bill."

Most of the SU players at this point are kids that Marrone persuaded to go to Syracuse. They're more like his kids than his friends. Easy call.

lets think this through. DM has his NFL job but it is one of the least desirable around and his likelihood of failure (whether his fault or due to the cards dealt) is at least 50/50. We have established here that he would never go back to the college game and would rather take a coordinator position in the NFL. O'Brien meanwhile is coveted by top teams in the NFL and may well have his pick of jobs, jobs that have a significantly higher probability of successful outcomes than the Bills job.

If Marrone is above all else self-interested (not that I would ever suspect something so negative about our heroic former coach) then he knows he may someday be looking to his good buddy Bill for a job. In a business where the stakes are so high financially, and evaluations are based on a relatively limited body of work, your allegiance to the team you used to coach might not mean too much (again assuming you are above all self-interested) - and EVERYBODY is trying to get some kind of an edge.

Given the track record of this guy I would be surprised if he DIDN'T offer up some help and precisely for the reasons everyone gave in justifying his leaving the way he did (it's a business and he had to do what was best for his career). Let the Marrone loving backlash ensue!!!

O'Brien is coveted by top teams? What is that based on?
