Binghamton Post Game Thread

felt like last year we were in the darkest of days, we went to like 2 overtimes just to beat youngstown state. there will be learning curves with this team, i am not completely sure we will shoot it well from outside, however it is refreshing to see us dominate, and play relatively well. also the energy, the team has energy, they communicate well, they demand more of each other, when it's relatively quiet like it was at the pace game and this one, you can hear the guys talk, the expectation is to do it right. it was nice.

We were very efficient, didn't turn the ball over, and played good pressure defense last night.

Can't quite put my finger on it, I wonder if there was a certain player that didn't play which made it easier to play as a team?

I think it is a combo of him being out and now we actually have a P4 point guard that is getting up out on the break and into proper sets.

I'm not a big JJ fan at all but this is a bit much. Last year he was damn near the only offensive player with a pulse when Donnie went down and he was also dealing with a hand injury. He was the only dude who could create anything off the dribble since our pg transfer was horrible and our wings had no bag. To expect his efficiency stats to improve in a year like that is not realistic. To act like he was our main problem last year (as some posts about him seem to suggest) is also kind of ridiculous when you consider the horrible supporting cast.

And now a game against an injured Binghamton team is the time to take a victory lap? The guard matchups will be a good deal harder for George and Kiyan going forward. We will need JJ's ability to penetrate and draw attention in the lane, which he has proven he can do even against high level comp. He will be playing less and there will be much less burden on him to make everything happen, which will give his efficiency a boost. While I agree on his defense, I am not exactly confident that George or Kiyan will excel in that category either against tougher comp. We will need minutes from him this year to be the best team possible.
The only real Problem with JJ is buying into being a leader, and realizing that playing less minutes, and getting the youngsters ready during the year is necessary.
The end result is get to the tournament and make some real noise.

I'm going to be optimistic and say that we would have played the same with that certain player on the team...however, i do have the same concerns re: defense.
There are other unnamed players NOT on this team which has me more optimistic than I have been in the past few seasons. IMO, there were major missteps with the transition from JAB family ball to the new era. I want to believe that factors which led to those missteps have been rectified and last night was nice data point that they have been.

I think it would be smart of Autry and George to get Kingz involved early.

I agree as the season goes on I think our best lineup will still be NG/Kingz/White/Freeman/Kyle

Anthony looks like a great 6th man scorer off the bench this year, but as a Freshman, he probably can't be counted on every game, so that is the role JJ should have.

Yeah, we need to get Kingz rolling. His talent exceeds his performance so far. Turn that around and our lineup is really dangerous.

That said, Kingz is the anti-Bell/Bunch, in that he's not completely useless if he's not hitting 3's.

He puts decent effort on D, and he's shown multiple nice drives to the rim.
He even had a nice dime, which is prolly 1 more than Bell had in his entire Cuse career.

Seems like a great teammate, and it's almost inevitable that a dude who has shot it so well will get it going again.
Especially since he's likely to be maybe the 3rd option that our opponents will be focusing on while he's on the court.

So the player that didn’t play that was the biggest addition by subtraction played like crap for Cal last night. 5 points 3 Rebs. Want to know why SU looked so much better subtract Bell and add George.

Last year we beat LeMoyne, Colgate, Youngstown, Cornell, Albany, Bucknell by 54 points combined.

Advantage this year.

Yeah it’s funny I was gonna go back through our early schedule and see the margin of victories but you beat me to it.

This was a reassuring win.

I couldn't agree more. Its tough, he's a great kid. But the numbers don't lie and efficiency wise, he has eerily similar numbers to Louie McCroskey. Let that sink in.

I know I'm the chief Chris Bell apologist, but I venture to guess that George getting point minutes over Carlos and the overall increase in athleticism and skill throughout the roster were bigger reasons.

I'll eat crow... I saw in this game what I didn't see in the exhibitions and the last two years for that matter
- A planned rotation... Red is going with the line shift change 6 minutes into the half. The job of the second 5 seems to be to speed up the game by playing a controlled full court pressure D and running on everything. Then the starters come back in and get to extend the run against a tired opponent
- Defensive rotations - there was help D, traps, double teams... the whole thing. FWIW this team would have been a suffocating zone team.
- Offensive plays - Lots of pick and roll off of George and a concerted effort to push the pace to take advantage of the numbers.

Open questions:
- This was a bad bad team they played... worse than Pace. What happens against better teams?
- I'm not sure what JJ's role in this team is... when he was in he took two wild shots, but did contribute one oop on the play that he got hurt. George looked much better after JJ went out... but it happened so early it's not clear whether it's causation or correlation.
- We don't have guys who can really get their own shot... this going to lead to some pretty ugly scoring droughts and inefficient offense during those period when the team loses focus and reverts back to iso-ball. it's going to be minute by minute challenge for Red to get these guys to play within the structure of the offense and run run run to avoid those scoring droughts.

One of the funner games in the Autry regime so far.

yeah, agree with this. If anything, I think Kingz is kinda eerily similar to Bell so far in terms of what he's doing other than shooting. Not much in the stat sheet and I haven't noticed his defense jumping off the screen.

Far too early to say that, though, so i look forward to seeing him play more and definitely hope we can work him into the flow a bit earlier than we have through three games.

I think Kings, Freeman, JJ, Kiyan, George, Betsy can get their own shot and maybe Fennel, White

Getting Kingz shots and getting him rolling need to be a bigger priority.

It feels like from the starting five we look more for Kyle than we do Kingz. Which is... weird.
