Things you see without a gun. Oh well
ALBANY — Bishop Kearney made its run to the Class AA public high school boys basketball state championship last weekend with strong defense.
The Kings had no defense for the state’s top player on Friday night, however, during the Federation Tournament of Champions.
Jon Severe, who was announced as the winner of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York’s Mr. Basketball award during the game, scored a season-high 40 points to lead New York City’s Christ the King away from Bishop Kearney, 68-55, in the semifinals of the Federation Tournament of Champions.
Severe, a 6-foot-2 senior, scored 21 of Christ the King’s 30 first-quarter points with University of Kentucky coach John Calipari in the building, the Times Union Center in downtown Albany. Calipari reportedly was at the opening day of the four-team tournament to watch Lincoln guard Isaiah Whitehead, whose team faced Long Island Lutheran in the other Class AA Federation final after Bishop Kearney’s game.
“(Severe) is the best player I’ve seen in my nine years at Kearney,’’ Kings coach Jon Boon said. “He did everything.
“He made 25-foot 3-pointers. He got out on the break. He broke people down in the halfcourt. We had no answers for him. The first play of the game, he dunked it.’’
Christ the King (27-3), located in Queens, is No. 2 in the New York State Sportswriters Class AA state rankings.
The Royals face the winner of the semifinal between top-ranked Long Island Lutheran (24-2) and No. 3 Lincoln (26-5) of New York City’s Public High School Athletic League, 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Senior guard Antwoine Anderson finished with a season-high 32 points on 12 of 23 shooting, including 4-for-4 from 3-point range.
Severe was 12 of 18 shooting, including 4 of 7 on 3-point shots

He's only a three star recruit, nor sure if the 40 point game was an anomaly or maybe his grades are not up to snuff. Rlvals rates his handle and passing as only "developing"..

The worse thing about UK season being over is Cal has time on his hands.

All possibly true. And maybe his coach was hyping him a bit when he said "“(Severe) is the best player I’ve seen in my nine years at Kearney,’’ Kings coach Jon Boon said. “He did everything.
“He made 25-foot 3-pointers. He got out on the break. He broke people down in the halfcourt. We had no answers for him. The first play of the game, he dunked it.’’

But he has offers from some decent basketball schools, like Pitt, Cinci, WVU, among many other mid-major schools. Academics can't be TOO much of an issue. And his handle can't be too bad. And he's 6'2", so he is not undersized.

Just a thought.

Confused, is Jon Boon the coach of BK or Christ the King, too lazy to look it up. Sounds to me from the article, that it was Bishop Kearney's coach who said he was the best player he'd seen at that level. In watching a couple videos of him from this season, reminds me of Russ Smith from L'ville. Fluid athlete, big-time range, just knows how to play (from highlights). Are grades an issue? Seems like he is under-recruited given his apparent talent.

I would think we'd be giving him serious interest as a combo guard, but I know we'd love to have Kaleb Joseph in '14 and maybe it would be a case of too many guards at that point if we signed hime (no clue if he has any interest in us) as we'd hopefully have Ennis, Gbinije, Cooney, Buss Patterson + Severe.

6'2 shooting guard doesn't seem to be the type of players we have been recruiting lately. it would be nice to have a basketball player though, to mix in with all our long athletes.

My bad. Boon is the Bishop Kearney coach, not Severe's coach at CTK. In some ways, though, this is even higher praise. And the Russ Smith comparison may be a good one.

Severe is a big time scorer and will be a steal for any team on any level. Rivalss has only one guy doing the rankings, so players will be missed by scouts a lot due to a lack of viewing and evaluations.
