His parents Rob and Suzy Bortles moved from upstate NY to Florida during some point.

The reason I bring this up is that a former player of mine who visited me yesterday played ball with Rob.

He said the dad was an outstanding athlete.

I'm wondering if George O' Leary got the inside track because he knew the Bortles.

The story below talks about their Phoenix background and the dads athletic prowess

Quarterback nobody wanted, school many ignored vault onto college football's biggest stage

Doesnt sound like it - i think purdue was his only bcs offer and they wanted him to play TE. Under the radar kid that schools missed

Like Aaron Murray, the Dad's grew up here but neither kid ever lived here and were born in Flirida.

Didn't Murray's dad go to ESM?

Weren't there some folks on our board who knew him?

Yep, ESM kid. Many here knew him or remember him. Great athlete whose best sport was baseball.

(Bortles) Did his father play Slow Pitch for "Bertha's Knight;s" ? HONEST

If it was a Phoenix/Fulton/Bville based team in the 80's it's probably him.

Didn't know that about McCann.

Think so, my buddy did too, Scott Smith. Scott said Rob was a great baseball player.

Neat. Did not know that. My kid will eventually have an option to go to Blake Bortle's HS. Growing up, there really wasn't anyone from any local HS whom went pro. The closest I can think of was Mel Hall from Port Byron. There are a ton of HSs with pros and former pros here in Orlando.

He was an okay baseball player. (good for Phoenix) I went to HS with Rob. Good guy, good athlete. Best sport was probably wrestling. Played RB/DB in HS.

no never recruited by cuse i lived in phoenix from 1971-90 and his dad rob was 7 years ahead of me in school no he did not play softball for berthas one of my old hang outs he went to georgia tech for 1 yr to wrestle then transfered to georgia southern for fb

Looks like Aaron Murray was a "5 star" in 2009 so I doubt SU would have been in the running especially then. This is the first I heard this kid was of the ESM family. I recall his father who was about 3-4 years older than I. His uncle was my age. His father was a good pitcher.

Yea, Denny graduated around '78. I was '73. He went to an Ivy League school first then to Fla Intl. Got drafted by the Blue Jays but only stuck for a year or two in the minors. Maybe he got hurt. He's a survivor of thyroid cancer while Aaron's mom is a brain rumor survivor. Rooting for the kid to have a good NFL career.
