he is supposed to be a defensive coach. he has been here for what?...6-7 years? why does the lack of defensive talent get a pass? the defense has gotten worse each year under shafer as head coach. where are the players, where is the talent? we have a 5-8 safety for crissakes.

Why stop there?

I blame Pasqualoni's third grade teacher if you really want to get to the root of it.

we have tons of O talent...except maybe the line

But the last 3 weeks, the other team had the best back...by a large margin.

In all fairness, we have a freshman running back. The guys that are Marrone players are not quite good enough.

Worse each year huh...we were a top 25 defense last year, how does your theory explain that?

Dungey, Fredricks, Ishmael, Phillips, Estime, the addition of Chris Clark 5 star TE.

The coming years that offense is gonna be tops in the ACC.

The D lost a lot from last year.

I might have actually done this once.

Why do people view these guys as some kind of talent windfall? They are all promising, talented players. But people act like SU's fall or ascent occurs in a vacuum. Last I checked, teams like Clemson, FSU, Notre Dame (Miami) are stacking players like this on their 2 and 3 deep. Our peer schools regularly sprinkle 4 star players into their recruiting classes.

If these guys stay healthy they have a chance to win a lot of games and be competitive with top teams. But lets not assume SU is more talented than anyone yet (except maybe Wake).

Completely agree with what you said about the D - very young. But we need also need some bigger athletes in our secondary.

Nobody said we were better or as good as those teams you mentioned. What is being said is that our talent has taken a huge swing upward. That is undeniable. You can't go from the basement floor to the penthouse without passing each floor on the way.

You do realize that when Shafer was DC and Marrone was the HC that Shafer couldn't just go out and recruit whoever he wanted right?

All recruits and offers went through Marrone, by the way you are talking, you clearly didn't know that was the case when HCSS was DC.

Don't forget HCSS is competing in the ACC and playing FLA State & Clemson each year...slightly different than the Big East schedule that Marrone coached against. ACC competition is a factor that requires talent level to take a leap forward from what Marrone recruited for....Gooornge!

Everyone who thought the D wouldn't take a large step back this season was delusional at worst, wildly optimistic at best.

The D has been the better unit of this program, save for 6 games in 2012, for a long time.

We desperately needed the O to carry the burden this year and that has not happened.

Agreed. We lost eight freaking starters from our defense. That's going to cause you to regress a bit 9 out of 10 times.

Yet.

And that's why we shouldn't give up on the season at this point. There is a correlation between good QB rating and win percentage. It can be enough to mitigate our defense. But we need to play like we can't stop anyone and not like we have last years defense.

From your lips to the staff's ears, my friend.

We need to play every game like its LSU.

And party like its 1999.

can't blame his third grade math teacher, he stopped after second grade

there is a correlation between a good qb rating and throwing the ball. but that's what everyone would expect us to do, not tricky enough

A little misleading. Kind of like saying a car salesman has to check with his boss before selling a car. Well yes, kind of like any job with a boss. You've made this comment before (like in the last week or two) and I've called you out before, that you're taking a basic concept and creating your own story around it. You're writing this as if you know that Shafer and Marrone had a difficult time agreeing on who to recruit and Marrone frequently shut Shafer down on players Shafer wanted to go after.

Some of the playcalling on Saturday left a lot to be desired.

Against a much more stout defense in a more kicker friendly environment SS goes for it on 4th. On a grass field and swirling wind against a reeling program he tries a field goal NFL guys routinely miss.

I am not too into the ratings, this stuff seems to be in range with the ACC programs we play not named FSU or Clemson, but the smarts need to be a lot smarter.

Well we know of at least once instance when Marrone shut Shafer down - Shafer wanted to recruit Chauncey Scissum, and Marrone didn't. As soon as Marrone left, that was one of the first recruiting calls Shafer made.

The head coach absolutely has the final say on who gets an offer. Our most recent commit, Lindsey Scott, is someone that Lester knew he wanted to offer after watching him in person but he had to go back to Syracuse and talk to Shafer about it first.

I agree with you on that. And we all get you don't like trick plays.
