Other than the somewhat mysterious 1st half play calling, the only other concern I had Saturday was the all too frequent lack of pressure on Pitt's QB (yes I know a DL finally got to him and crushed him).

If Clemson ends up having to play an RS or true freshman QB, the situation begs for blitz packages.

Gotta put pressure on him and get to him early. Get him throwing some off balance balls, and hopefully pick one off. Really mess up his game.

Agreed! The lack of blitz/blitz packages we have been running I think has hurt us. we can do it as evidenced by knocking out Pitts starting QB and I think no matter if Kelly Bryant is able to start or either of the true freshmen we need to blitz but I'll leave the calls up to the DC and HC DB.

It's a chess game. If it's not unexpected, it's going to get picked up and we'd make the QB's day easier. Not Clemson's first rodeo or first blitzes they'll see. We can be equally effective with a new QB by dropping more into, and disguising coverages.

Have to pick our moments.

When you don't have a lot of talent up front you have to blitz, I would blitz a lot against Clemson if I was running the d.

we will blitz and will cover some. Gotta come with blitzes at the right time while minimizing the big plays against

did anyone actually check to see how much we blitzed compared what it felt like in the game? many times we run 4 pressure but its actually a blitz with a DE drop off.

I think the situation actually calls for mixing in a few zone blitz packages. Size and Numbers might not get through that O-Line, especially without leaving us vulnerable. Confusion and speed might be effective.

21% of all offensive plays for Clemson this year have been Bryant running with the ball. He runs with it more than any Clemson RB. By comparison Watson last year did it 14% of the time and Dungey this year is running 16% of the time. I haven't watched much Clemson FB but I'm guessing a lot of those runs are Bryant abandoning the pass and running with it instead, similar to L. Jackson last season at UL. Given that, is blitzing the best move?

Also, if Bryant has a bum ankle and starts anyway, how good will his 'when in doubt run first' strategy' be?

Yes, but you have to put a spy on Bryant.

So we should stay home and not play cause their qb is fast?

Most are called runs, for Bryant. Whether Bryant plays or not IMO the QB will run less than they have been.

Also think blitzing is not what you will/should do...Wake did early, but later moved to forcing Clemson to work down the field.

I'm thinking that we run a lot of our base Tampa 2 and allow Clemson to move the ball pretty easily between the 20's, and then we really tighten up in the red zone and try to hold them to 3 points. I think this helps "slow" the game down and allows us to hang around until the late 3rd or 4th quarter.
