Much of this thread is a living, breathing, exhibit A of how bad this board has become.

Says...Reggie" we don't play man to man defense... He said that would be like me asking why you don't drive to the hoop after missing two shots... Oh thats right... because you never could drive to the hoop Reggie." Amazing
just read this thread now.JB makes press conferences fun.

It's amazing that some people are so dense as to think m2m is an instinctive skill. It takes longer to learn those nuances, and that's why you see some of these great m2m teams struggling early on and steadily improving as the season goes along. JB's zone is the opposite - great early on and then its "magic" slowly wears off.
We have Jason Cippolla to blame for this whole thing. If he doesn't make that shot, the zone goes back into mothballs the very next season.
so, every coach who ONLY plays man is wrong as well.I can't believe it, It seems he's lost it.
"Oh he was probably just messing with him"... WOW. Sounds like the same ol same ol to me, 'how dare you question my Zone Defense, I am a genius" Jim Boeheim
Clearly he heard people were using their professional opinion yesterday to explain why playing only one defense regardless of the game/time/score situation is stupid. I wish he would hear it everyday of the week until he realized EVERYONE AGREES with this except him!
This thread should never have been conceived. Too bad they don't make condoms for fingers.
We don't win the title without m2m in 2003. That's a fact. Everyone talks about 1 game where the zone was effective - Oklahoma - and conveniently overlook all the times JB switched to m2m/press in the 2nd half to save his a$$.I am 100% certain we played m2m in multiple games in 2003. Typically switched to it when we were down double digits in the 2nd half (like the triple court storming Pitt game).

What games in the tourney did we go m2m?
The only game we pressed that I remember was OK State...and the only reason that worked is because McNeil blocks like 5 shots in a row to save our ass.
Regular season:
Georgia Tech - m2m/press/zone
Pitt (home) - down 13, switch to m2m
Notre Dame (home) - down 12, switch to m2m
Rutgers (home) - down 9, switch to m2m/press
Okla St - down 18, switch to m2m/press
In 1996, JB began a 7 year courtship with the zone when the media started saying they were a cute couple. In April 2003, he proposed. It's not that difficult to see the trajectory. Between 1996 and 2003, he was still somewhat open to switching out of the zone when it was digging them a hole. After the title, he would only switch out of it when the game was hopelessly out of reach.
6 games was not a big enough sample size. But if you want to focus on those 6 games... the zone was the advantage in only 1. In the others we simply outscored the opponent and then clung to the lead. Aside from 2010, 03 was the last functional half court offense JB had.Why did you change my post?
I asked what tourney games in the original post, then you changed my post within the quote box to misrepresent what I asked.
Please don't do that again. I didn't do that to you.

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone sound angry about the 2003 national title. Weird.
Angry? The point is we have not moved beyond the sweet 16 since JB decided to play zone exclusively, which is 2004 - present. We should all hope that's just a coincidence.
it's not like he was doing it regularly when he was playing man
Zone came into great use beginning 1996, which is convenient because it is right in the middle of JB's run, so lets take a look - twice past the Sweet 16 in 18 years prior to 96, twice past the Sweet 16 in 18 years from 96 on.
I am going to go out on a limb and guess that is not a statistically significant difference.
