Serious question - Does Syracuse actually have "boosters"? If so, are they likely on the BOT or are they unaffiliated with the University but are considered major donors?

For instance - If Coyle gets approved for 2.5M a year, but needs another 500k to get the guy he wants, is their a list of boosters that he could attempt to raise the additional 500k from? Or is this a fantasy that only happens at a factory school?

Wasn't Bill Rapp a booster once upon a time? Wasn't his "generosity" the reason for the 1st round of NCAA sanctions in the 90's?

Doesn't the bulk of the head coach's salary come from our contract with IMG? And didn't we renegotiate that earlier this year?

All schools have boosters. Any STH is technically a 'booster'.

From the NCAA:

Who is a Representative of Athletics Interests?

The NCAA broadly defines a "booster" as an individual, agency, entity or organization who is known by an institution to:
  • Have participated in or been a member of an agency that promotes the institution's intercollegiate athletics program
  • Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or a booster organization for the department
  • Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution's athletics program
  • Have been a season ticket holder
  • Have provided benefits to student-athletes or their relatives or friends
I think the question you want to ask is "Does Syracuse actually have "well-heeled boosters with deep pockets willing to subsidize a football HC salary"?

Bingo. Thanks for the info. As an STH, I am unfortunately not a "well-healed booster." Would be interesting to find out if Coyle's position did come with a small rolodex of names that he could call on for additional funds if needed in situations like this. Not talking about $15M like at LSU, but 1-2M, maybe?

Ideally we would be pumping out NFL talent or have a pipeline for professional business opportunities for former players creating a network of wealth from which to receive funding from over time and create a positive cash flow cycle. Unfortunately I do not think Syracuse Athletics is that sophisticated or successful in this area, which goes back to Jake and Daryl. That is one area the AD can improve upon greatly.

When Coyle was hired there was significant attention paid to his fundraising prowess at both Kentucky and Boise State. I suspect his attracting contributors of all levels is one of his biggest priorities, if not THE biggest. From what I understand, Gross focused only on the whales, and it was not entirely successful.
