Brian Ward: officially the DC

Lester was a HC/OC prior to SU and Bullough was a DC at UCLA.

That's a very good point. There shouldn't be any learning on the job anywhere on staff.
For me this was a non negotiable. They had to have experience in a role and not be a first timer or learning on the job.

Wasn't this year Raymon's last year?

2011 Iowa Didn't play
2012 Tranfes sit out year
2013 SU Soph Year
2014 SU Junior Year
2015 Senior Year

Marrone petitioned the NCAA based on family circumstances to get another year and it was declined.
My bad, I meant to say Ron Thompson -I am always getting those two names backwards.

All in.

I think babers said they'd play defense to the personnel strengths and they can play an attacking scheme or tampa

The whole fitting the system to the players (on defense) is probably the best thing I've heard him say since he was hired. Easiest way to start on your best footing.

Can anyone give me more insight on the kind of defense he runs? Maybe BGFalcon09 would be good for this if he's still around. Is it more of an aggressive/blitzing type? Has HCDB given us any indication if he envisions us being more aggressive?

His base defense is out of the Tampa 2, always has two safeties high which typically play in zone coverage. One criticism I do have of his scheme is that the middle of the field is sometimes wide open, specifically against teams with good TEs we saw the defense get picked apart a little. Make no mistake though, he definitely improved a very poor defense. Seems like a good coach and a good dude.

Bend but don't break is all we need once the O is up and humming. Don't give up big plays, make the other O work, wait for them to kill drives with their own mistakes and be opportunistic with turnovers.

This is Ward's defense...you'll give up yards between the 20s but force teams into FGs down in the red zone. When BG played Ohio University, they had over 500 yards of offense but only scored 24 points.

IMO, Tampa 2 is the best defense to handle the spread with read option bias. Hard corners help take away the bubble and zone read. The deeper Mike zone in the Tampa vs traditional 2 deep takes away the deeper post and dig/deep in.

The cons of that strategy are more of the bend/don't break mold. It also places a premium on rangy safeties and additional coverage pressures on the lb's. You must have the personnel to run it.

In SU parlance, play 2-3 zone on D and focus on scoring on O.

:)

We definitely do not need additional coverage pressure on the LB's. Hodge was awful in coverage this year, and the other two starters were average at best. And outside of Cordy, the safety position might be the weakest on the team.

Hopefully these young guys are able to get up to speed and the experience they gained this year will help them.

Sadly, when I hear "Tampa 2" i think of Robinson's failed tenure marked by defenders with analysis paralysis, the savior Pierce never being able to play, and Luke Cain (God bless him) unsuccessfully chasing slot receivers out in coverage.

Hopefully this iteration will be better.

Unlike a certain arrogant Twitter warrior who was hired to run our offense a couple years back.

Screw that I want Alabama's defense.

Which is a refreshing common sense approach. Match your scheme to the abilities of your personnel.

I think we have a lot of raw talent in the secondary but they need to be coached up. We are also going to need to recruit more size at the safety spot going forward.

The DL remains a source of concern.

Everyone wants that defense but very few can recruit the talent to run it well enough to have similar results.

When I saw Glendale cc the first thing that came to mind...

If he is the interim HC at BG still, I assume he won't be recruiting until after the BG Bowl Game?
