I'm not commenting on religion, per se -- I just get queasy when it mixes with the dirty, ugly, win-at-all-cost world of big time athletics. it feels really hypocritical. I'm sorry if that offends.

No problem. I just watched a documentary on Bill McCartney. Was thinking the same thing as you at points of that film. I just think that coaches and players should not be required to put their faith away when they compete. I get that that's not what you were saying though.
