Bud Alert! Poliquin touts Dolgon for SU AD

You know the beat writers must read his stuff and go into immediate "face palm" pose.

If you want to see the opposite of how the PS reporters handle Syracuse look no further than the Dolgon and the Crunch.

He didn't just call him Dolgan. He called him the Crunch's poobah! Seriously, why does this man have a job? This may be the dumbest hire idea since Gross hired GROB.

I know nothing about him - does Dolgon run the Crunch poorly?

Is he a bad businessman?

Does he put a bad product on the ice?

Crunch are well run. Its a hobby for him. He has other businesses and lives in NYC. Why not have Bob Congel?

same here. everyone's saying it's crazy but no one says why. i'm all ears, I have no clue about the crunch either

why would we not talk with him???seems to me it would be wise to have a business person who is diverse and active in the sporting world---mulcahy rebuilt rutgers from the ground up.

He's just grasping for straws for column inches (are they still around?) and hits. With that mindset, no wonder he lost 11K in Gray's ponzi scheme.

It's the messenger, I think.

Also - and I'm not sure it really matters - but there is a divide between academia/college world and the business world. I'd be real interested in what the media nationally would say. None of these concerns would keep me from hiring him - but I'd think about them.

Having a marketing/promotions person as a consultant/advisor or even someone on the staff is a good idea. Someone who hasn't spent time in an athletic department (preferably P5) is going to struggle as AD.

Ideally you'd find someone who has 10+ years on the staff at one or two institutions (at least one P5) followed by a stint as AD at a G5 program. A stint that does not involve any NCAA sanctions. If that person spent some time on the Hill then that's a bonus. One person with a similar background, albeit D-III, has been mentioned here.

Another pool of candidates would have the same 10 years of experience followed by executive/marketing experience, coupled with fiscal responsibilities, in the sporting world. At least one such person has been mentioned here a few times.

Methinks Kent will find the right person... and wait to hire until he does.

No. In fact I think you could argue that he's done wonders with one of the worst buildings in the AHL. I think he has put a staff in Syracuse that gets the community and works hard to make big events feel even bigger.

I don't know that he has any inclination for the politics involved with the AD position. As owner, he calls all the shots. At SU, he'd have to answer to a lot of bosses. He's worth talking with, but I doubt he has any interest in the job.

i hope you are right. i do not know what to make of him in relation to sports in general and football in particular. i have only heard chancellor speak re the dome, and somehow i get the feeling he will take the cheapest way out, and there will be half measures taken. again just my impression from what i have read re him.

Marketing marketing marketing with Dolgon would lead to ncaa violation ncaa violation ncaa violation death penalty! Dolgon's response: Why can't we do that? Uhhh cause ncaa regs prohibit it.....(even though they shouldn't).

He runs it fairly well. This is a business that doesn't have to abide by ncaa regs. SU there might be a problem With the NCAA compliance is the name of the game, something the renegade Dolgon doesn't take kindly to. I would love to see Dolgon as NCAA president/dictator. He would cut the BS in half. Dolgon is to owners as Harvey Keitel is to actors. In fact he comes across very much like Harvey.

Howard Dolgon is a good man and a creative business man. He would be awesome to have influence in many areas (marketing innovation), but a full-time job in a University/NCAA setting would drive anyone to go "Dave Brandon" at some point.

How about this?

Double the salary that Gross was making and go hire someone who has PROVEN themselves in the private space.

If he does his job correctly, the increased salary will be more than paid for.

Damn.
