Buddy Boeheim: Pacers Summer League

Interesting that the Pistons cut Buddy and ended up signing Cole. Buddy had some good moments late last year for Detroit.
Cole has been the better prospect since leaving college. If you're looking for that type of player, I'm sure most teams would take Cole based on the last couple years in the g league / two ways.

Boeheim, though, dealt with an injury to the thumb on his shooting hand for about three months and acknowledged it affected his shooting stroke.

By the mid-season All-Star game, he said, x-rays showed a break in his thumb. There was also ligament damage. He tried to play through it but eventually elected to undergo surgery that shut him down the rest of the season.

“I hurt it during a game (in December) and knew right away it was definitely not good,” he said. “But at that point in your career in the G League, you wanna do whatever you can to keep playing and get that call-up. I was still confident in my abilities, but it obviously affected my shooting. It was tough to play with, but I just love being out there.”

Boeheim said he had surgery about six weeks ago. He was in a hard cast for about a week and is now in a “brace/splint type of thing.” He’s taken time off to heal and decompress from the season. He plans to start easing back into basketball this month, then play in the NBA Summer League

I love that Buddy is still grinding and getting to do what he loves for pay. I hope he gets enough call ups to qualify for the NBA pension plan, and to save enough of his own money where he won’t need his dad’s money after his career.

Then buddy can start the grind on his coaching career. Wouldn’t it be cool if Buddy was Red’s successor in 15-20 years?

I love the positivity and optimism that Red could potentially be around for another 15 to 20 years. That means the team has a bright future and will be highly successful for Red to be around that long. Go Orange!! I see 3 to 4 championships in Red’s tenure and a red colored dome aptly named.

More zone? No thanks

It will have been a very long time since Buddy played for, or coached under, a coach dedicated to zone defense as his primary defense by the time my (imaginary) time frame comes around.

In my hypothetical, Buddy hangs up his playing sneakers in, say, five years. Then he works assistant coaching jobs for 12-15 years, and kills it in his first head coaching job at thirty something years old, just in time for Red to retire…

If/when Red is done here, I never, ever, EVER want to see a HC chosen because he happened to play for (and/or be related to) a former HC.

Period.

Global search. If Red lasts as long as some of you think then life will have been detected on other planets and we could get some kind of self aware microbe from Planet X as our next coach.
