Buddy

In a pinch yes. But I look at it as we have 3 guards, 3 forwards and 2 centers. I’m VERY concerned about the 5 now
I think Buddy is 6'5 180 - that is really, really small to play the bottom of the zone in the ACC. It would be emergencies only.

I don't think Bazley was gonna play the 5 too often. If PC and Bourama can stay healthy, I'm not really worried about the 5.

Have a friend who has watched Buddy his entire career who knows his hoops. He said he’s more athletic than Rautins fwiw.
Rautins was a good ball handler and rarely (besides that 6OT game) played the 3.

News to me. Rautins played the 3 a lot his junior year. Most of the time we played he, Flynn and Devo together and Onuaku/Rick split time.

JB is loathe to go small at the 3 (see: Andrew White as a 2 for a month ugh). It will be enough to put Hughes there. I don’t think Buddy plays a minute at the 3 but I could be wrong.
Size wasn’t the issue with White. Athleticism and tenacity were

I agree with you on Buddy. Bazley was never going to play the 5. Way too thin, he'd got pushed all over the place.

Dolezaj did. Baz would have played a few minutes here and there.

Rick jackson would be a perfect addition to this team.

A third big, who can play the four and five, and also score in the post.

That's exactly what this team needs. We need another 4 man. Badly. We just lost two!
We lost 2 PF? Lol.

If Bourama comes back healthy, we're fine - if not then obviously yes, we need someone else... but as per Dean's pod, what quality grad xfer (or even recruit for that matter) is going to come here to likely be the 3rd center, or be behind both OB and MD at the 4?

I don’t know if there is anyone out there, but Dolezaj isn’t so great that he can’t be beat out by a solid seasoned player. He had a very good final 6 games, but before that he earned his playing time by not being injured and not making too many mistakes on D.

I know Buddy pretty well. A few tidbits...

1) His name is Jack. He got nicknamed Buddy by his older brother who is only 18 months older. He was Jimmy's "little buddy"; that is how he became "Buddy."

2) He is a consummate gym rat and a very good shooter. Ever since he was very young, he has worked out at the Melo Center almost daily after school... unless he was playing/practicing with his high school team.

3) He has the sweetest, most gentle disposition. One of the most likable young men you will ever meet. He's actually quite shy. (All the Boeheim children are lovely, unspoiled kids. Great parenting there).

4) He was seriously recruited by significant D-1 teams until he committed to Syracuse. He was offered by Gonzaga, and Duke, among other schools, was very interested in him. But some were hesitant because they assumed, at the end, he would go to Syracuse.

5) This may be a story out of school... but so be it. JB was not recruiting him and did not want to recruit him. He wanted the recruiting process to play itself out because he knew Buddy would wind up in a good place. However, the SU assistant coaches are the ones who insisted Buddy should be offered by SU. They knew him both as a player and as a person ... and they really wanted him at SU. Jim was hesitant because he did not want it to look like nepotism.

Excellent post! Thank you for sharing this!

Thank you CTO . I needed this as my head was about to explode last night with Alsacs craziness (this is why my post count is so low--as you and all the originals know, I have been on the board for nearly 20 years). So less than 24 hours after the biggest recruiting bombshell in Syracuse history, he declares, "all my sources tell me we are not recruiting anybody else for next season". Alsacs-- I realize you have connections, but the problem is that you didn't give them time to digest or think about the devastating impact it might have to the program (and no, before you ask---I have no information that we are looking at anyone during this long Easter weekend...).

All I know about Buddy is that he is going to face a blowtorch of criticism on this board that will make Cooney’s treatment seem Carmelo Anthony-ish in comparison. There is going to be some really horrible stuff posted here. Not looking forward to this at all.

You don't know that. How can you possibly know that. It's as if you are hoping it happens so you can then condemn people. Those that get the most criticism here tend to be those with high expectations. I don't think many here have big expectations for him...I think more likely he'll be a pleasant surprise to people.

Great info Joyce. Why is this Duke info suppressed though? I heard Gonzaga and Georgetown but never duke. Fascinating!

From his tapes Buddy is a great shooter and is the type of guard that often gives us fits on midmajors. If he was more athletic he’d be a high major recruit. It’s his main limitation.
That’s why I was hoping he’d have a year to redshirt—to work on his lateral quickness and get stronger. It really helped Andy Rautins and Trevor Cooney.

My hope is that with his son on the team Jim will at a minimum change his public approach when discussing players.

My guess is Buddy’s father will be on TV a lot.
