Hartwick, St. Laurence and RPI have better D1 tradition than Buffalo. Its laughable that they think they're in the same conversation as SU. They're not even Cornell.

Neither is Syracuse.

I am not sure why we "should". If I am from Rochester and go to school at Brockport, Niagara, Bonnies, Canisius, Nazareth, Fredonia, UB, or Buff St, etc... why would I want to affiliate with the private SU? Why would SU be my team? I don't know that it's a reasonable expectation.

If you were from Rochester you probably grew up watching Syracuse football and basketball on TV, not any of those schools in the metro Rochester area. Syracuse has as much to gain there as any D1 school.

Buffalo sports talk doesn't know UB exists. Its Bills and Sabres, and rightfully so. Syracuse is big-time college sports. UB is a rival for Niagra and Canisius. Not Syracuse lol.

Being from Rochester... Rochester is definitly cuse country. You get pro sports from your west, college sports from your east. Until we played UB a few years back I didn't know they played D1.

Funnier still: The post we put up about it on NunesMagician has turned into a pretty heated debate with UB fans. They don't agree with the "preeminent" wording (who could?), but they do believe they're in better shape than SU fans are willing to admit.

Well they are obviously in much better shape than SU fans will admit. I think everyone, if they're honest will agree. UB sports are dramatically improving as a result of this flagship campaign.

That's ridiculous.

We all know the four money sports; Football, basketball, hockey and baseball.

UB won the MAC last year in baseball, nearly won their side of the MAC in football, have a chance with a new DUKE coach to potentially win the MAC in basketball...and are in the process of developing a Division 1 hockey team.

Saying Hartwick, St. LaWrence, and RPI in the same sentence as UB will be, and to me is, laughable.

I don't see any improvement. Even if there is improvement, how do we know it's caused by Buffalo attempting to rebrand?

To be honest I don't ever know whether UB or any of those schools is having an up or down year by their standards. I care as much about UB as I do class C Oregon Football... which of course has as much change of dominating the NY sports scene as UB does.

I don't care what the cause is, improvement is improvement. The two main sports that this poll is obviously referring to is basketball and football.

UB set school attendance records for football, nearly won the MAC, had a linebacker set the NCAA records for TFL's and FF's, and has now 3 players that may be drafted (1 in the top 10).

That is undeniable improvement.

Basketball? UB is no where near having any influence in NY. However, they are making great steps. They hired Hurley from Dook and are competing for the MAC this year.

UB will never, ever touch SU in basketball and I doubt will ever touch them in football. I think it's wrong though to say that the schools programs are not improving though.

Hartwick has a D1 championship in men's soccer and a total of 7 appearances in the Final Four. Even its fairly new D1 women's water polo team has a Final Four.

RPI men's hockey has 5 Frozen Four appearances and 2 championships.

SLU has 9 Frozen Fours in D1 hockey.

I don't think you can combine all of buffalo's programs to have the success, history and tradition of these programs at RPI, Hartwick and SLU. Does Buffalo athletics in its entire history have a Final Four in any sport, much less 5, 7 and 9 like these schools do?

I have a friend who is a huge Buffalo booster. He's always on the sideline and I see him on tv a lot when Buffalo plays. I have nothing against Buffalo, but what I said about tradition was 100% true.

Trueblue25 is a UB student and pines for an SU v. UB rivalry. He won't pass up an opportunity to push for it. I am not criticizing. The kid's got spunk.
Damn you for putting that song in my head. I need the Hüsker Dü version to cleanse. ;)

I would just like to point out that Hartwick has more D-1 national championships than Rutgers.

Edit - but I see NKR already kind of did.

Go 'Wick!

Table Rock, the Brass Rail, cold pizza. It was all good.

Today's, the Rail, Sal's, Italian Kitchen, Red's and all those damn stairs.

I voted for NYU ... they used to have sports teams!

UB went fully D1 in the 90s. UB has over 20 Division 1 collegiate sports.

RPI, SLU and Hartwick combine for 10.

UB has quite a few athletic achievements of its own. http://admissions.buffalo.edu/campus/athletics.php

What you said about tradition is true. Tradition comes with success and age, with the the programs you mention have. UB is young and just beginning to experience success.

UB can't yet combine its programs for the tradition and history of those 3 schools, but the success is arguable.

P.S. I love that you brought in RPI, HArtwick and SLU.

You are a true sports fan, I admire that a lot if it means anything.

Their "problem" is WNYers hear UB and think of the university first and all it generates for the region, and the sports teams second or much later. Which, really, is how it should be.

The rebranding as New York thing is to differentiate the two but it seemed to turn off a lot of Buffalo folks (Talkin' Proud).

I'm glad for my sake that UB's much more well known for their academics. However, there has been a lot of effort to branch out around Buffalo, and expose citizens to UB sports.

However, I honestly don't think it can work.

Buffalo sports fans are some of the most passionate and loyal fans in the nation...

I don't think they need another team that will time, and time again fail to achieve greatness haha

Khalil Mack just received the Jack Lambert award for the nations top linebacker.

There's an achievement haha

You obviously love SU and there's nothing wrong with loving the place you go to school as well. There are days when, if I had to choose, I'd rather Hartwick win a soccer championship than SU win a football championship. Maybe 1/5 days, but it makes me kind of sad that all the D3 schools with one or two D1 sports are finding it so much harder to compete. And while blasphemous here, I respect the hell out of Hopkins for remaining relevant into this decade when so many others haven't known great success since the 80's.

Nothing wrong with finding loyalty in the establishment who helped make you who you are today. I'll always be a Syracuse fan first, born and raised there. But, because UB has been so helpful to me financially, academically etc. I'll always have tons of love for them too. I don't play a sport at UB but I consider myself lucky to have enrolled and started attending the school when I did. The sports are starting to cause a lot of excitement around the school. A tradition of good, fun sports is in its early, early stages of development. I just love how much support the school has thrown behind it. I've been to every home football and plenty of basketball games. I can see a growing interest every time, except when its 20 degrees and snowing hah.

Also nothing wrong with respecting outside programs. Sports are a beautiful thing.
