We have struggled in this portion of the game for a while. I think if the special teams can help all season long it could steal a game or two.
Our punting is top notch.
Our FG kicker looks solid.
Our PR looks really good if Estime stays healthy as we had our first PR TD since 2003.
Our KR we didn't get much a look at and that is fine with me.
Our coverage teams did really well.

Whomever is coaching SP did well thru one week.

Hate to have to rely on the kicker to jar that first fumble loose, but that may have just been excitement and a lack of willpower to stay in their lanes. Tough field goal from 45 yards on the miss. Otherwise all good.

Shafer said Norton bailed out Ellison (true freshman) by jarring the ball loose.

3-4 years ago we had 4 kickers on the team and none could hit the end zone on KOs. But I don't want to rely on fgs this year.

I credit Steve Gregory.

Why? He isn't STC. He isn't even on the field. His job is to look for areas of improvement. He is assisting not coaching.

Good post.

Given how undisciplined we have been in games these past several years, it was refreshing to see us look solid in all three phases of the game Friday.

That crazy start notwithstanding, of course! But after those zany first few minutes, we looked solid.

I can't believe that was our first punt return for a TD in TWELVE years.

That used to be a staple of Orange football. Hope we see a couple more this year.

Yeah I couldn't believe that when I heard it.

Imagine that--kick-offs that finally reached the end zone! Honestly, they were the highlights of the evening for me. So tired of seeing opposing team receivers catching the ball between the 15 and 20 and then running it back to near mid-field or beyond. Our poor defensive guys seemed to start every series with their back against the wall.

He is Special Teams Quality Control. You can bet he's giving his thoughts and opinions on things, and coaching these guys up. Shafer didn't bring in an ex-NFL player and SU alum to catch kicked balls during punting practice.

But, even if he's in the background as much as you say, the fact he's providing his thoughts on improvement would not be heard by deaf ears.

He was standing within a few feet of Shafer for a big chunk of the 1st half (not sure about the 2nd).

He was in the coaching booth the entire game. I am not saying it isn't a good thing to have him here, it is. But people here seem to think he is STC, which he is not. In addition he has no coaching experience. How is he some STs guru?
