By the end of his Syracuse basketball career..

Nichols, Fair, Warrick all skinny minis of the 2000s

Not so much Fair, but yes on the others and I am sure there are others over the years. Louis Orr was the prototype. Some of these kids were skilled enough to play right away despite being thin -- Orr is an example. Others weren't players until they did a lot of work on S&C -- Rautins.

I can't see BJ defending anyone (playing the back of the zone in ACC play) until he adds muscle.

However, I could see him playing the front of the zone which is where he'd be.

BJ Johnson will be one of the best players to have played for the cuse since the turn of the century, and possibly one of the best all time.

I have a great feeling about this kids attitude, work ethic, athletic ability, brains, basketball skills and upside.

I just want to make an official thread so everyone knows it was trueblue who called it.

During your run of superlatives for a player who has yet to play a single regulation game at this level, I thought for sure you were going to add "and the one of the best in the history of ESPN." Which would have put you in the rarefied air of some of the more infamous board prognosticators to ever have graced these boards over the years. Ironically, the most famous of the infamous commented in this thread and his prediction probably has a far greater probability, though still remote, to be accurate.

I get the point that you are trying to make with those statements. And, I really like BJ's potential and confidence. But...I'm all for giving him some time to actually play and develop before we try to judge his legacy.

I'm one fan of over a million. If I thought this thread would bring pressure on this kid I wouldn't have posted it. All I'm trying to say is that I think people are overlooking this kid. I personally think he will one day be great. I have no idea about the pros but I truly believe he will be one of our programs great players like CJ Fair is now.

With teammates like this years team, kaleb joseph, chris mccullough and any combination of the 2015 prospective class to practice against and feed off of?

This kid is very talented and very athletic...so are the majority of our recruits.

However I believe he'll be great because of his tenacity, attitude, values, and intelligence. These are things that you do not often see in high school prospects with futures and upsides as bright as BJ's.

I'm just over excited and extremely proud that our program is recruiting kids like this, and not just some hotshot wannabe celebrity overnight.

These are all just my opinions.

Are you a family friend. If not, you can't possibly know any of this.
Kid looks like he could be a fine player. Let's see him against some competition first.

From what I've taken from his videos, exhibition games, articles, recruitment pages, our members, and his father... I've drawn excitement.

Again I don't think he'll be an immediate contributor. College Basketball does take adjusting.

Think he plays the second most mins out of the freshmen class

Welcome your prediction and am not challenging it, but can you name the last SU player rated 3* by Rivals that excelled to this degree, or even close?

Hakim Warrick was a great player; he wasn't an all-time great, but "the block" was an all-time play. Warrick was not a 4 star. He was at best ***.

Lawrence Moten also was not a **** and he's the Big East all time leading scorer.

I trust Jim Boeheim in his recruiting and wouldn't challenge it, not saying you are.

I also take ratings on recruiting sites with a grain of salt.

We are gifted in the fact that our program takes players and makes them better. We are not simply a stop inbetween high school and the NBA.

Players attend Syracuse University.
Players work and improve at Syracuse University.
Players earn and receive national recognition at SU.
Players win at SU.
Player get drafted from SU.

We have great coaches, great fans and alumni, a fantastic program and a superb atmosphere to mold young men into something special.

I have been a believer since he led his Lower Merion team to the state championship over Rondae Jefferson and Chester. Beating Chester is no small feat. That tells me he is a winner and will excel, whether it's this year or in the future I don't know, but it will happen.

wes johnson was only a three only played 3 years one of which he spend the whole season with a nagging injury played both sg and sf and was the 4th pick in the nba draft. Highschool rankings are guidelines, they aren't bullet proof just like all the 2nd round nba picks that ended up being stars and all the top 10 picks that didn't make it.

BJ had to conform to his teams needs in highschool. Rankings run on potential lots of the time and they didn't do bj's ranking on potential but on stats.

I don't expect him to come out and be a main contributor for years. He has weight to put on, and it's a big adjustment going from high school to the greatest basketball team in man kind (syracuse :) ). However, by his junior and senior year I believe this kid will reap the benefits of his hard work and surprise us all.

It's very, very rare to see a naturally basketball talented, athletically gifted, motivated, and intelligent kid come out of high school like him. If Syracuse fan's give him there support, as they always do, I see big things.

The stars are aligning Cuse fans.

The ACC must know

Indeed. JB has his own culture.

The three main rating systems are surprisingly accurate. Over the years they have only been significantly wrong with a handful of SU players. As orangefan13 correctly notes, Wes Johnson - who was actually rated by Scout and Rivals at 2 Stars, later changed to 3. The most drastic error in recent times was Andy Rautins. They all rated Andy a 1 Star prospect and he got drafted (albeit short-lived) to the NBA - so they have erred on occasion.

The only point I making is that you are describing BJ Johnson as a 5* prospect. Very rarely are the professional rating agencies off by that much.

Hard to argue against Hak - he belongs in the SU all time great discussion. One of our top all time scorers and rebounders, made AA teams Jr. and Sr. years, BE POY, and a key member of our championship team with perhaps the most iconic play in SU history.

He did reasonably well for 8 years in the NBA as well.

He's on my list of all time SU greats, and inarguably the greatest dunker in recent SU history.

Stevie Thompson belongs in that conversation, especially considering his lack of height.

5* prospects are prospects that are already ready for College basketball, and potentially professional basketball when they come out of highschool.

A 2, 3, or 4 star can develop into just as talented as the highly rated prospect given a few years of observing, working and practicing.

The thing about BJ is that he is STILL 17 years old. SEVENTEEN. A lot of players are 19 turning 20 their freshman year nowadays.

If BJ had two more years in high school, can you imagine how high he would be ranked?

This kid is basically getting two years of elite bball experience where other kids would still be on the AAU and HS circuits.

I predict he does well in spot minutes this year. I think he'll be full rotation next year. And then he'll have a monster junior year and go to the league as one of the top wing players in the draft after we finish off the third consecutive NCAA title run.
