By the end of his Syracuse basketball career..

Sure Triche was a four year starter but I think that hurt him in some ways.He had far too many games which he disappeared . No shot attempts for lots of minutes. I think he was a competitor but he did have a knack for this happening. As I recall Howard was a reluctant shooter. Thats not to say they were poor at it ,only that they could have put the ball up far more than they both could have and not been ball hogs in that respect
While I don't disagree with your Triche assessment, I have no idea where it came from.

Uh no. I said I thought, respectively, that BJ will end up being one of the best players for Cuse since the 2000. Is that so damn ridiculous?

I wasn't here for the Fab Melo, Donte Green or Wes Johnson threads but I suspect that they were a bit more extravagant.

I'm excited with one of our prospects. I believe he's very young, therefor underrated, and I believe he'll blossom at Syracuse. If you don't believe me? Cool :) If you agree a little or completely? Cool :)

If you want to try and turn this thread into something it's not, or try to make a fool of me, off :)
That's where your thread started, but it got a little out of hand somewhere in the middle. I'm happy you young guys are all excited over each and every guy coming into the program and I hope you're right that they all turn into great people and players. The reality is that they aren't all going to be great players at SU. There is only so much playing time to go around and there are externalities that can derail even the most well-intentioned kids - academics, injuries, life. You don't have to go too far back to find examples of potential "best-evers" that fizzled out.

I don't think you can compare BJ with any of the 3 guys you mention, Fab was 7'0" tall, which brings a different set of hype. Donte was ready to be a D1 starter from day1. Had he stuck around for at least 1 more year, he would have been something special. Wes Johnson was somewhat proven at the college level when he transferred here and after a year of practice with the team while sitting out, he was ready in all respects to step in and be a star.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade or make a fool of you, just that maybe a bit of temperance might be prudent, especially for a guy even you admit isn't physically ready for D1 right now. I apologize. I'm just a sarcastic old bastard who likes to be a smart-butt from time to time, but I will gladly jump up and down next to you and yell just as loud and high-five you til my hands sting when we cut down the nets in March.

I'm not excited for everyone. I refuse to be negative about our freshmen, but I'll just say I'm most excited about BJ Johnson.

Also I wasn't saying BJ is like Fab, Donte or Wes. I'm saying I like him a lot because he will be more of a program guy like CJ Fair. Not to diss the 3 pros, but they came in expecting the spotlight and to be launched into the NBA, less so Wes.

I respect the manner of your response though, I agree with a lot of what you said.

Also I'm not Bjorn, so yeah.

Can we let these kids play a game first?

How do we know anything about BJ's"tenacity, values, intelligence, etc."? Or that Roberson is "supposed to better than Billy Owens"? C'mon! Let's let it happen! You'd think the board would've learned our lesson after the whole "dynasty" debacle years. Recruiting rankings, guys who supposedly look good in practice, and looking good in layup lines at Midnight Madness...none of that means squat.

However, I could see him playing the front of the zone which is where he'd be.
If you see BJ as solely a 2 on offense, and limited to playing the top of the zone, he may not have the upside you predict.
Gbinije has the ability to swing between the 2 and the 3. Andy Rautins did that in his junior year -- which gave him more opportunities to play.
Those watching practice report that BJ is practicing with the forwards (and I know his father says he is also working some with the guards). It is probably his best shot -- fill out his 6ft 7 frame, and do his scoring from the SF position.

Got me thinking who have been the tallest twos we've had. Wasn't mike Jones 6'6 or 6'8. What was deshawn Williams?? Didn't shumpert play some 2?? He was 6'7.

If BJ is to play the 2, IMO, he needs to become a very good ball handler and at 6'7 having those smaller guards on you will be tough.

Tallest guys to play the 2, regularly? Maybe Rautins or Keuth Duany.

Dewhawn Williams was 6ft 4.

We have had forwards playing a bit of two-guard: Shumpert, Moten, maybe even Bill Owens.

Tallest player at the point, regularly -- easily MCW.

Starkes: candidates for unluckiest family ever.

Father: named traitor and beheaded.

Mother: killed at wedding after witnessing the killing of her son.

Eldest son: killed at a wedding after witnessing the killing of his pregnant wife.

Elder daughter: married to a psycho and then the most hated dwarf in the kingdoms - both from the same family that engineered her older brother's murder.

Younger daughter: the lucky one; good with a blade and learning to be a faceless assassin in a cool far away city.

Younger brother: thrown out of window and a paraplegic; at least he's developing some super cool psychic abilities.

Youngest brother: a dufus, apparently.

Grandfather: boiled in his armor.

Uncle: strangled by rope while witnessing his father boiled in a suit of armor.

There's probably more but this is a good start.

how can you forget Jon Snow the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryean, just gutted at the wall

I really can never see BJ getting run at the 2 unless it is spot minutes here or there. JB loves to his guards to be combo guards, where they can run both the point and off the ball. I just don't see it in his current game, or the way we run our offense. With that said I think he will be a very good 3 in a couple years

By spot minutes you mean if we lose a guard and need someone (BJ) to step in for a bit, or you mean garbage minutes. Because I agree with you saying in spot minutes but if we have another "issue" at the 2, BJ might and should get a look.
But, yes, down the road I think BJ will play the 3, and be very good in that position.

Both. Obviously if there were an injury to Silent G, or Cooney he could pick up some back up minutes at the 2, but other then that I can't see him getting more then a few minutes here and there if the other 2 are having a bad game. Plus these guys are just 1 class ahead so I really see his future primarily as a 3.

Yes, of course - although we don't know for certain he's been killed. Interesting you mention Lyanna and Rhaegar as the parents - my friends who are truly absorbed with the books have mentioned this - what level of confidence do the ASOIAF geeks have? Imagine if the other two dragons are ridden by Tyrion and... Jon? That would be neat-o.

He features no resemblances to a targaryen though

stahp guys please, the books not coming out for another half year or so :(

Now I'm sad

it's pretty much 99.1% that they are his parents. after the first time reading through i stumbled on a forum that pretty much said it's a definite, so i read the series again, and it is blatantly clear.

I am with you as the dragon riders as well. Tyrion is rumored to be a secret Targ, so all 3 would have dragon blood.

wait there is a release date? i haven't seen one yet?

GRRM has hinted towards a tentative release date between 2014 and '15.

that's the best news i have heard in a while. i am convinced he is going to die before he finishes the entire season

I'm not trying to set him up for failure, I'm just a college student with high hopes for a recruit I believe in and think is special. I'll support the kids on the team no matter what.

This thread is me venting my excitement :)
Bro, you vent anytime you need to. Best venting we can ask for.

You don't have to like him, you don't have to love him, but I guarantee you will grow to love, respect and cheer for him as an Orange for years to come!!!! Nuff said at 17yrs old!http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=4V7B6Z6bQrI#t=4
