BYU/Ole Miss

Same old story with a Dave Ross coached team. Defensive is never a priority and it comes back to bite them again. I was really impressed with Ole Miss though, finally started to look like the team that took UK to OT in Lexington earlier in the season.

Luckily, in my office pool, we use the CBS Brackets which allows you to move BYU/Ole Miss through instead of just picking one. Actually feeling somewhat confident that Ole Miss can take down Xavier and Baylor like I had BYU doing. Of course, seeing how last night played out, i'm fully expecting Ole Miss to lose to Xavier and NC State (my other S16 darkhorse) to lose to LSU.

BYU would drop 100 on us lol. Our guards should watch these guys perform. They are so sound with the ball and their passing as a team is very nice.

It really was a great game. I'm working at a client in Denver all week--had a late night, and didn't get out to dinner until around 9pm MST. Sat down at the bar and Ole Miss was down around 15. They promptly went on a 12-2 run to make the game close. It really went back and forth--very exciting game, with the lead changing hands several times over the last few minutes.

One of the most entertaining games i've seen all year.

Indeed. Seemed like once Ole Miss's guards were getting into the paint at will for lobs or floaters the tide really turned. That Stefan Moody and the other guard Summers were awesome.

Concur.

I mean, I'm a huge fan of these 52-45 games that seem to be increasingly prevalent in the college game (not really), but my god, it's fun to just watch skilled players hitting shots and just going up and down the court exchanging blows. I know people complain and chalk it up to a lack of defense - but basketball is a beautiful game to watch when the shots are falling and you're not watching 30 second per possession slug fests. That was a terrific game to watch.

I said the same thing to one of my colleagues last night--things open up so much when you have guards who can penetrate and force the defense to react. The Ole Miss guards were phenomenal.

And BYU, to their credit, played right down to the last 10 seconds, too.

Yup. Was very impressed with Haws and Fischer too. Collinsworth was off shooting but you can tell he's a serious player. Almost had a triple-double.

That is so true. Obviously, BYU played poor defense. But there was actually quite a bit of good defense [mostly by Ole Miss] that enabled them to get back in the game. Shockingly, refs called contact that impacted plays--GASP!--which made for a clean game with offense as the emphasis.

The second half was like one highlight reel play after another. Sometimes, from both teams in back-to-back possesions. Very refreshing to watch, after watching teams like Pitt turn college basketball into a street fight abomination and get away with it.
