Cal Postgame

To me outside of George not playing to what we thought he was going to be this s the biggest misstep of the season. JJ was priority number 2. Even when Kingz was cooking in early games we would go entire halves without even trying to get him the ball. Red was using him like Chris Bell the first 15 games of the season and the player seemed to be buying into that's how he should be used.
Horrible mismanagement of his talents. He is the best scorer on the team. Him and Donnie should have been the bell cows on offense all year (I get Donnie was hurt). They should be touching the ball every single possession. Specific plays to set up drive/shoot quick decisions with secondary options for the rest of the guys. Kingz should lead in FGA every game with Donnie behind him. I want George shooting 4 times a game, extremely inefficient.

Super happy the boys won, just frustrating how it’s the 25th game of the year and the stuff mentioned above is just getting worked out.

the travel is a play that sums up our current state of basketball. JJ absurdly picks up his dribble after (I believe anyway) Donnie cut the wrong way on the play.

Instinctively every player who has laced up sneakers from Junior High on knows that if a teammate has a dead dribble you have to run to him to help. All 4 of our guys either stayed stationary or ran away from him.

Ending with JJ thinking nobody would notice his multiple changes of pivot foots converging into something like the electric slide.

Nobody knows how to play.
That was bad but I'll one up you.

Mid way through the 1st half we're scoring well and just go up 3. Cal misses BOTH FT's then we don't get the board then they kick it to Bell for an easy 3 :). Tied up again, crushing.

Someone can check my stats too but I put the over/under of shots we airballed at 7. I think Kingz airballed 2, JJ's had a few, and George had 1-2.

Always free throws but the watching us go 1-5 from the line with 4 mins left in regulation is just crazy.

I worry its only getting "worked out" because kingz drew (arguably) the worst iso defender in the country in Chris Bell. I think he should get far more opportunities than JJ to take on his man becuase he forces people to cover him at the 3 point line

I mean that’s the nature of a west coast team belonging to an east coast conference. They play at BC on Saturday so I assume they’ll stay on the east coast until then. It’s not like they flew out here just for our game.
It’s stupid anyway. Re-align all sports except football into geographically logical conferences. Football would be great too but that won’t happen unless all P4 revenue is shared equally like the NFL

If you look at SMU's schedule, the ACC did them no favor. Every other game basically is home and away. Six separate trips to the East coast and only one they can stay over for a 2nd game. More than any school should have to. But I guess that's the downfall of being the only Texas school in the conference.

It’s so weird because his good ones are really good. Just the disparity between his stroke on the first 3 of the game vs the last FT is crazy. I’m pretty sure he hit his chin with the ball
On the last one
There is a neurological condition called focal dystonia that affects a fair amount of musicians and skill athletes. It is related to specific repetitive movements. Your neurons essentially misfire and you can’t do things you’ve done thousands of times. I almost wonder if JJ has some of that going on. There are crazy videos online of tennis players who can’t throw the ball in the air for a serve, golfers who can’t complete a putting stroke, musicians who can’t sustain a note. It’s exacerbated by stress and overthinking.

Kingz free throw shooting drives me insane. There's absolutely no reason this dude should be 62% from the line. He should be mid to high 70s.

Because he rushes and it’s never been addressed
My wife happened to catch the end of the game & OT’s as well, I was trying to explain to her the the confusion of why Kingz is a veteran player who plays with great pace & typically smart/efficient shots struggles from the line. I think rushing it is exactly right. No deep breath, no rhythm dribble, he literally shoots it as soon as the ball hits his hands from the ref… the speed of the catch & release looks like he’s playing knock out with friends😂

Every one of these guys shot free throws in the gym with coaches watching back in July. And the only one who's addressed his struggles is Kyle... who did that on his own.

The stuff this staff ignores is mind boggling.

I thought that SU played a much better in the 2nd half and OTs. It was generally entertaining (minus some key gaffes). Defense played mostly solid. Shot selection is still the hardest thing for this team. They get into their sets and as soon as the defense reads the play, the offense breaks down into ISO, over-dribbling and chucking up mid range jumpers.

the easiest way to score is ISO ball. The issue this team has is that they struggle to realize that if they don't have the ISO advantage move the ball to someone else. But then our off the ball movement is so bad its hard to make that pass half the time.

It explains why we are also so bad at getting rebounds, No one seems to know how to move

After watching Starling for 2 3/4ths seasons at Syracuse, I've learned that the best we can hope for is that his positive plays outnumber his negative plays by at least a couple in any given game.

Tonight he accomplished that. Yes, he was a sieve defensively, and OMFG that travel... but he locked down Ames on a critical possession. Yes, he threw up some wild shots... but he hit some daggers down the stretch.

A meaningful issue with this team is that JJ is our #1 or #2 shot taker most nights. That's entirely on Red. But Starling is who he has always been. Tonight that helped us win. Others, not so much.

This is the best take on JJ.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, probably land somewhere in the middle.

The issue is he's treated like a star and he is far from it.

It doesn't matter at this point, the biggest issue by an order of magnitude with SU bball has been the coach dating back to the end of JB's time.

JJ is just the latest symptom of it all.

I'm impressed that we won without winning the second half.

Kingz shot 82% from the line last year on more attempts per game. Curious to see if he changed his routine at all this year and that’s what is affecting him.

If we beat SMU this weekend, is it safe to say we're probably in the ACCT?

(Yes I completely understand that is the most depressing question known to man)
I’d have to believe we’re pretty much in at this point. There are 4 teams with only 2 conference wins and another with 3. Will 3 of those teams get to 5 or 6 wins?
