Campus crime map...

Gosh, Thornden Park looks rather empty.

In seriousness, I'd take this map with a grain of salt. First, DPS makes Giansante and the Jersey Proofreading Department look conscientious. It's basically workfare for pensioners and academy drop-outs (yes, and that very pleasant and personable officer who everyone seems to know).

Also, there aren't any robberies flagged on this map. Does DPS not record those? Are SPD-investigated crimes not included here?

That's a pretty big chunk of the crime statistics (I'd argue the most important in terms of our perception of student safety on and around campus; in what areas might a punk try to club me over the head and rob me?).

I'd say this map is essentially useless. I count less than 12 burglaries in what is supposed to be a four year time frame. The DO had an article a few weeks ago stating that there were 29 reported burglaries of SU students homes during this year's winter break alone. Not trying to say there is an epidemic of violent crime but there is a major problem of break-ins with regard to student properties (not the dorms but slightly off campus). I know this from my own son's experience and that of several of his friends as well. The students are targeted for their laptops, X-boxes, cell phones, televisions and any other valuables that might be lying around. It's bad and all of the happy maps in the world can't hide the facts.

What is this based on? On-campus crimes? Crimes investigated by campus security? Because if these are just crimes committed against SU students, things have gotten much better since my time on the hill!

Nothing like seeing a map of where I grew up, shoutout Greenwood Pl.!
