can cincy beat ohio st?

Personally, I absolutely think Cincinnati can win. I won't go so far to say they 'match up well' per se, but they have a lineup of good guard that can defend with versatility. Yancy Gates-Jared Sullinger will be a great match-up of bigs. I think, as jdubs30 said, Thomas will be the difficult issue for Cincinnati to defend. His tenacity down low is something I don't know Cincinnati is able to match with their four-guard lineup.

I think it's going to be a great game.

I think UC will be forced to play Justin Jackson at the 4 to matchup with Thomas. Wright and Kilpatrick will get a lot of PT with Dixon/Parker splitting time at the 3

Agree with you on that. Thomas is a matchup nightmare, too big for UC's guards and too athletic for most big guys. UC will need Justin Jackson to play his best defensive game of his life and stick to him like glue all game to keep it close.

I don't care who we get in the Elite 8, just get there. We've shaken off a couple of albatrosses this season, specifically, Louisville and Pitt. It's time to shake off that Sweet 16 albatross. Get us to Saturday and I'll take whoever gets there with us.

The phrase "Cincy can't beat Ohio State" is flat out wrong. Anyone can beat anyone in the tournament. Especially when you get down to the sweet-16. Cincy absolutely CAN beat Ohio State, but Ohio State is the better team.

I agree with all three of your statements above. Obviously, strange things can happen in a single elimination game.

And there is some animosity [on the Cincinnati side] toward OSU in general that should provide some extra motivation--should make for an interesting game.

I think that animosity is more fan-driven than anything. I doubt that someone like Cashmere Wright from Georgia cares about OSU

Take it from someone who lived in Ohio--the OSU fans are as fervent of a fanbase as you'll come across in college athletics. There aren't many that compare with it [PSU and Texas readily come to mind].

If you're not part of that cult, it is rather annoying. And the other D1 programs in state all have beefs with OSU about various things. They all feel overlooked because of OSU. No question that it is fan driven, but some of the guys on Cincinnati ARE from Ohio [Gates], so maybe it will be personal to someone like him. Maybe he'll play with a chip on his shoulder that he might not have against a different team.

Look, I'm not suggesting that Cinci needs any extra motivation, or that something like this is going to fuel them to a tournament win. But remember when Xavier played OSU in the 2nd round of the tournament a couple of years ago--the year OSU advanced to the finals? Xavier was pissed because Ohio State would never play them or schedule them, so when that tournament game got announced, their eyes lit up. It was like their superbowl--they're chance to prove that they were better than the big kid on the block. I think they lost in overtime--almost pulled it off. And there was PLENTY of extra motivation on the part of those scrappy Xavier kids.

I would be surprised if Cincy doesn't win. People are getting really excited with OSU and MSU, not impressed with either.

MSU hasn't impressed me once this season. I would rather play them than a team like UL or even Baylor

Last time we lost out of conference was Butler, right?? I'm rooting for OSU.
I understand your thought process but that Butler loss was only two years ago and we didn't go that deep last year. Either way I think it would be foolish not to root for the Bearcats knowing they don't have the fire power that OSU does on offense.

to repeat, anyone rooting for ohio st needs to have their brain examined.

My daughter went to Michigan (easily as fervent a fan base as that "school down south"). We played horribly against Cincy in the city. That won't happen again. Root for Cincinnati. Just remember, we gotta get past the cheese eaters first.

I can't wait to watch this game. Yancy Gates against Sullinger will be one of the best matchups so far. Having watched OSU a couple times this year, I know that Sullinger has a tendency to get frustrated easily (This is the big reason I wanted to see him go up against a big goofball like Fab).

If he can stymie Sullinger (which I think he can), the Buckeyes become a different team...one that has to rely on Craft, Buford, and Thomas to initiate the offense. They aren't usually as confident when that happens and are definitely more inconsistent. I think Yancy shows the country that he can bang with Sullinger and even outplay him.
