Can college basketball avoid a repeat of college football's calamity?

Alright, just had an idea. Conferences choose a central location to 'bubble' for the season. For us (the ACC), the Raleigh-Durham area seems like the best choice. Three major schools there, sufficient hotel accomodations to house the teams, or they could figure out dorm set-ups with all the students that won't be on campus. Teams all go there for the entirety of the 'season' whatever that may be. Most of the players will likely be doing online courses anyway, so what does it matter where they are? Split practice times at the three 'host' schools.

Thoughts?

Charlotte Marriott ... Home Game !

Definitely more doable than NCAAF, even without a bubble. If higher ed is largely (entirely?) forced back to virtual, a centralized bubble location by conference is an interesting idea. Honestly, that would be a hell of a unique experience for all of the kids and staff involved.

Well played moderators, well played.

I wasn't quick enough this time, but there will be others...

More advantage for the State of North Carolina teams?

That a college basketball bubble is even being contemplated shows how drastically things have changed over the past few decades.
It's now clearly a big business first and foremost...any real education is mostly coincidental.

Yes, I know, I know.
"The kids want to play."
Sure.
It's all about the Benjamins.
If it wasn't, would anyone really want to go through the inconvenience and expense of making sure "the kids could play?"
How about a soccer bubble?
Or a field hockey bubble?

How? There won't be fans in the stands. How does playing in an empty arena in Charlotte and/or Greensboro favor them? The only possible "edge" would be having NC State play in Raleigh since they know the sight lines, etc. Okay, put their white jersey (formerly known as home) games in one of the other arenas. Everyone is operating under equal conditions in Charlotte and Greensboro.

They might be sleeping in their own beds.

Duke would still be playing 8 vs 5 in a bubble.

Not if they're in Charlotte or Greensboro.
Charlotte to Chapel Hill - 140 miles, 2 hrs
Greensboro to Chapel Hill - 50 miles, 51 minutes
Greensboro to Charlotte - 92 miles ~1.5 hrs

The only team close to Greensboro is Wake, 32 miles, ~35 minutes

With 2 games a week, if you were Ol' Roy would you want your team on a bus that much, especially if they use both sites? The way most schools seem to be operating, there won't be classes from Thanksgiving until February. Plus, the ACC could mandate that everyone stays in hotels to level the playing field and maintain the bubble, a là the NBA.

The only way Duke wouldn't play 8 v. 5 is to bring in PAC-12 refs, so ...

One year, the ACC and Southwest Conference traded refs for a year, to get people used to the different reffing styles they'd face in the tournament. It only happened that one year because Dean Smith went berserk about it.

Have an ACC bubble from December to mid January.
Find a location.

18 games over 36 days.
Then a conference tournament to end.
If they chose Syracuse you could play 2 games at the Dome at the same time and use the Melo Center as a 3rd venue stage games.

You need a venue where 3 games could realistically be played at one time.

All schools would be out of classes from December to mid January. So no missed class time.

The NCAA tournament could be in a bubble in March.

Good idea but the 18 games in 36 days is just a bit too much. Not to mention it really takes coaching prep out of the equation. I can live with that to get the season over with. But I do worry about injuries with that many games in such a short time span. You might want to extend that to the end of January. the learning will likely be remote anyway.
