Obviously I'm very happy we are 7th. But why are we 7th?

We are 4-1 with an SOS of 141 and an SOR of 53. Our BPI is 7th.

Rutgers is 5-0 with an SOS of 95 and an SOR of 6. Their BPI is 36th.

BPI has factored in coaches and players past performance. Also teams get points to win by large margin. So blue blood schools could still have high score even they have done poorly on win-loss record.

BPIs are harmful in your drinking water. When buying a plastic water bottle, you want to make sure that they specifically say "BPI free".
It's possible that I'm thinking of something else.

Sarcasm aside... like other rankings, the basketball POWER index is one of the computer generated methods to weight a team’s strength.

It factors in some of prior year - if the team is mostly intact (which we are), margin of victory, schedule strength of opponents, and future schedule (which is strong in the ACC).

Normally some kooky teams sneak in the top in the beginning of the year (preseason tournaments), but it all shakes out by mid-January. In normal years.

From ESPN
“College Basketball Power Index
The College Basketball Power Index (BPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward. BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is.”

Our BPI ranking dropped from the 7th to the 9th after the close win over Northeast.
