Can someone please explain how this HC and offensive coaching staff went thru spring ball and training camp and didn’t start Shrader week 1?

Devito played very well against Ohio.
Ohio is 1-4; they stink. We could have beaten Ohio with Albany's QB. Using them as a measuring stick for performance isn't exactly a tough test. DeVito stunk against Rutgers. He played nearly 3 1/2 quarters and we scored 7 points at home. I can't believe people here still characterize his performance as "good". The games Shrader has started are the first games that we have looked like a competent offense since the Camping World Bowl.

The staff cost the kids a chance against Rutgers:
If Shrader is given the keys right away we can beat Rutgers.
We better get to 6 wins or that game will bite us.
We scored 7 points against Rutgers.

7 points.
We could have won Rutgers if we ran the ball with Tucker after he scored the TD. Instead he didn’t get another play

I agree that his game impact is inflated by our board.

That said, I can absolutely see the coaches feeling way more comfortable building a plan for Shrader that involves a 9th year post doc fullback.
That’s fair haha

Our offense looks like it has way more upside with #16.
I really don’t get how this HC didn’t give him the keys against Ohio and actually put him in a spot to do his thing against Rutgers.

I mean
Its a good question. My guess is for a guy like Shrader, where in practice and scrimmage settings, you dont have live hitting on the QB. Things get whistled dead, it doesnt show his escapability, toughness to break tackles, etc and so his strengths are not being seen.

Think of a physical MLB, his style of play wont show up in a 7 on 7 passing tournament where its all pass coverage with no pads and contact

I think DB has a vision for his offense, and that vision includes a QB who touches every part of the field with his arm and QBs/WRs making perfect pre snap reads. I think Dino heavily favors veterans of his offense who get things right on the chalk board and in practice 90% of the time.

I think it's as simple as Shrader not being able to show his skillset outside of real game situations. How do you know a guy can evade the rush, break tackles, and make plays when the play is blown dead just as the defender gets close enough to allow the QB to showcase his best skills? Combine that with ugly throwing mechanics and Shrader doesn't look good until he gets into a real game.

Have you seen him throw?

Dino made a mistake choosing Devito but it’s very very easy to see why Shrader likely isn’t the better player in practice.

They had actual game tape on him from his time at Miss State playing in the SEC. That's legit.

the QB who "can't throw" throws for more yards than that when he starts...
Love Shrader but there’s no need to put those two words in quotes. Remove the quotes….unfortunately
