Here is what I think has happened. I think JB likes to have a system. A system that allows him to still coach at this level when he no longer has the same energy and appetite for traveling. He became an overlord of this system. He has the assistants do the recruits and he does the "closing". He has the assistants run the practices and he watches the practice from his office via the multiple big TV screens. There was an interview he conducted a few years ago in his office in the Melo Center where he showed the various screens he has to watch as the practices are being conducted. The assistants are his extensions, he gives the order the assistants executes. This results in several levels of disconnects. First, he is no longer tight with any recruits. The recruits connect to the assistant coaches who recruit them, that talks to then on the phone, that visit them during games, that texts and facetime them twice a day. Second, he is no longer tight with any players, not the way he was with DC, Devo, Gmac etc...you can tell from their stories on the Devo podcasts they were up close and personal with JB, and JB ran their practices, yelled at them during practices, Scoop talked about JB hugging him in the shower after not playing him in Philly at a Nova game. I don't think he has that kind of relationships with current players (except Jimmy and Buddy) anymore. Being disconnected from his players makes it easier for him to criticize them during his pressers or yell at them during timeouts. He doesn't yell at Buddy or Jimmy, is that favoritism? I don't think so, I think he doesn't yell at them because he knows them so well, he knows that they knew what they did wrong or they did the best they could and he doesn't need to spell it out for them, instead he channels his energy towards motivating or lighting fires under someone else's ass to get more out of the other guys he doesn't know well, it's not a good look and it screams bias but he is too old to worry about perception and the media/internet people who don't matter to him. He kept simplifying and simplifying the system to allow himself to coach at a high level, and the system just doesn't work today. He built himself an Ivy League team as a result.
