Watching the Cardinals and Dodgers play, I recognize that over the years, they have had the greatest success of all the national league teams. I know the Cardinals are second to the Yankees in World Series won. But I wondered: who has won the most pennants over the years, (and I mean league pennants, not divisional pennants). The answer can be found on Baseball Reference.com:

Just click on the name of the team and you have their entire historical record, which for the Cardinals and Dodgers begins with the American Association in the 1880’s. (And the Caridnals started out as the St. Louis Browns, then changed colors.) That was a major league at the time, the first rival to the National League. It went out of business in the early 1890’s but had enough credibility that their champion played the champion of the National League from 1885-1890. Many baseball historians regard those series as the first “World Series”, although others treat it as an exhibition series since in both the first and last years, the series ended with the two teams tied. But if you do treat those as championships and coutn the National League winner as the overall champions when the series ended in a tie, (because they were the more established league), it looks something like this:
Cardinals tied “World Series” (WS)
Cardinals won WS
Cardinals lost WS
Cardinals lost WS
Dodgers lost WS
Dodgers tied WS
Dodgers (no rival league so no WS)
Dodgers (no rival league so no WS)
Dodgers lost WS
Dodgers lost WS
Cardinals won WS
Cardinals lost WS
Cardinals lost WS
Cardinals won WS
Cardinals won WS
Dodgers lost WS
Cardinals won WS
Cardinals lost WS
Cardinals won WS
Cardinals won WS
Dodgers lost WS
Dodgers lost WS
Dodgers lost WS
Dodgers lost WS
Dodgers won WS
Dodgers loost WS
Dodgers won WS
Dodgers won WS
Cardinals won WS
Dodgers won WS
Dodgers lost WS
Cardinals won WS
Cardinals lost WS
Dodgers lost WS
Dodgers lost WS
Dodgers lsot WS
Dodgers won WS
Cardinals won WS
Cardinals lost WS
Cardinals lost WS
Dodgers won WS
Cardinals lost WS
Cardinals won WS
Cardinals won WS
I count 22 pennants a piece, the Cardinals with 12 “World” Championships and the Dodgers with 8. Quite a legacy.
