Can he put aside his scorer's mentality and run a half court offense?  Can he find the open man and make consistent good decisions with the ball in his hands?

These are the key questions.

He needs to be patient and prudent.  He needs to be a coach on the floor.  If he can do this, he will start and have a great career here.  If not, he will limit himself to playing mostly shooting guard, where competition for playing time will be fierce.

IMHO, I think this is a huge deal for the coming season.  It could well drive whether the team makes the NCAA tournament or not.
