Author seems to have confused, at times, the most important with the best. Melo has far more importance than many, but he is certainly not a top 40 all time great, IMHO, whereas, Lattner certainly is a greater college player than Melo.

Yeah, I don't know if it was the case in college, but I assume it was; in the NBA in the 60's teams took and miss TONS of shots.
