Carmelo Anthony....Racist?

"These are just some of the beliefs behind the bling — the gaudy Five Percent Nation medallions worn by Jay Z and Carmelo Anthony."

The above is quoted from the article in the New York Post:

So, Carmelo wears a medallion of a black supremacist group that believes "whites are devils". This is no better than somebody wearing a swastika or a white hood on their head. Racism of blacks on whites is no more excusable than white on black racism.

Shame on you Carmelo, you just lost a fan. Repent. Get your head on straight Carmelo.

Calling it like I see it, criticize me if you like. Racism is not acceptable, period.

"Black people cannot be racist." Go ahead, Google that.

Jay-Z is awful at everything. I'm mystified by his success. If it wasn't for Kanye West we'd already be rid of him probably. Oh well, I guess we're stuck with him for a bit longer.

The man that brought you classic lyrics like, "thirty-eight revolve like the sun round the Earth," and the super awesome line in 99 Problems where he gets pulled over for going 55 in a 54. Which some people try to justify as making sense, but I've heard him interviewed, there is never a deeper meaning unless someone else is writing for him. He's a moron. A very wealthy moron, but a moron nonetheless.

As a result I'm guessing he wears the medallion because it's shiny. And Jay-Z likes shiny things.

Melo probably wears it because Jay-Z has one. And it's shiny.

Rappers will help other rappers get paid, even if they suck. It's the same all over. I hear Atlanta is full of overpaid, over-hyped rappers.

I can't stand white people. So you know...

My guess is Melo is clueless as to the meaning of the medallion. As much as I've been a fan of his for what he did for the basketball program, nobody can claim he's the brightest light in the house.

Here's the reality:

From a "news" perspective...I'd do the story, too.
What does it mean to Jay Z who not only is a huge "music"/cultural figure but is a sports agent and former part-owner of an NBA team?

He's a guy whose fans happen to include the President of the United States and whose image and behavior extend to his wife, another huge star.
As such, the symbols he wears are not irrelevant.

BUT...is that enough to label him a "racist"?
I don't think so.
Certainly, no more than the Confederate stars & bars being used as a symbol by southern rockers.
One of my favorite bands - The Allman Brothers - have been linked to it and they've had black guys in the band since day 1 (let alone the fact they idolize the great black blues players).
Far more significantly, the stars & bars are part of the ambience of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The explanations may be strained to northern eyes and ears in 2014 but that doesn't make them racist.

People put different interpretations on symbols.
That doesn't necessarily make the use of them right.
But it does provide some context.

By the way, far more distressing are some of Jay-Z's lyrics and language.
It fairly can be called anti-social, misogynistic and anti-gay.
How come no one raises THAT issue?
And how come no one has asked the President about it while he's praising Jay-Z as one of his faves?

Or how about entire state institutions flying the confederate flag! Imagine if that happened!

I doubt Carmelo knows much about the meaning, nor cares. Just like I doubt that Dajuan Coleman is actually a St. Louis Cardinals fan(someone asked if he was in that weird post where people were trying to be detectives or something). He's probably got like 5 other baseball teams hats. Not all segments of the population follow the same fashion rules.

The explanations are strained because they are stupid and nonsensical.
Although I'm sure Gary Rossington is one of our foremost thinkers on racial issues, his logic is flawed right out of the gate. Rossington leads with the premise that the Civil War was fought over states rights. States rights to enslave black people, maybe. Other than that it's just an excuse for southern sympathizers who realized that promoting & protecting the institution of slavery makes for some unsavory PR.

Was Carmelo Anthony a bust during the 2002-03 season at Syracuse? Feel like a question like that fits with the "vibe" of this thread.
