Carthage High School freshman football player dies from brain injury

My nephew who is in Kindergarten plays in a pee wee (or whatever its called) football league on Long Island. I was very surprised to see that they're in full pads and tackling at age 5. I figured it would look more like flag football and teach the kids running, throwing, the concepts of the game, etc.

Obviously, you arent going to die from shin splints, but man they are SO painful.

It’s why I don’t run! Well, I also hate running

I have 6 yr old daughter and there’s no football at her school even if the thought popped in her head. Although she’s cycling/mountain biking and I don’t know that that’s necessarily safer. Like a lot of people on here it seems, I think I’d struggle to let my son play. I played up to HS and I’m not that big but was fast and athletic. I remember in 7th grade playing against kids that probably should have been on JV. I was a linebacker trying to tackle kids significantly bigger than me. Kids are even faster/stronger now but not all of them.

This my feeling but just a feeling. I wonder if at HS level, the disparity between some of the kids with personal trainers who are just freak athletes too and the kids just doing it for fun, is so large that during games the collisions are far worse for the smaller/recreational players compared to years ago. Just a thought that’s been on my mind for awhile.

Happened to a kid from Phoenix like 10 years ago too. Don’t think they ever figured out an exact reason why.

I missed it but ABC World News had a story tonight on it.

Just saw in Canada the university of ontario I believe had a lineman die. They didn’t say what from that I saw but eluded “after the game”

I'm obsessed with football in every sense of the word, but I don't want my son playing it. I struggle with that because it makes me feel like a hypocrite.

I can't imagine what those parents are dealing with right now. Devastating.
My first son played through Pop Warner. We aren't allowed to play high school sports because we home school. I was hurt for my son who really wanted to play in high school after Pop Warner. Now, I don't really care. My younger two sons have not played Pop Warner and I never thought I'd say it but it doesn't really bother me.

I played for 12 years, I have a 3.5 year old. He really isn’t into sports yet, just starting soccer but I wouldn’t encourage him to play football. The physical and mental toll it took on me is tremendous. I will let him make up his own mind, but I should have quit after high school. RIP to this young man.
This post fascinates me as to why you wish you had quit. Not challenging. Curious.

There are others in this thread equipped with some information, but there are some very interesting merits to football. If there was ever a SyracuseFan.com fundraiser, I’d totally show what we learned working with the NFL, interviewing some NFL players for the project, etc. Risks/merits are real (note: wouldn’t allow our twin 15-year olds play tackle; our 10-year old is entering his first year.)

I don't have a good answer for why I still watch. I know it's barbaric. They haven't fixed it.

My son would be successful, he's big and fast and dialed in. There are times I wished he played because he'd love it. But it was a no go for my wife. I probably would've let him against my better judgment.

So I’m right here where it happened and spoke to a ref last night who said there was no one appreciable hit nor any injury that occurred.

Nor any one play that anyone noticed it may have occurred. Personally I think it’s likely it occurred during the game and was missed/wasn’t noticed but I don’t think they film jv games so they might not be able to look for it.

Regardless have to assume an autopsy will be done shortly so they can figure out if it was from a fractured skull/brain trauma from an acute injury/hit during the game, or if it was some kind of quirky weird genetic/congenital malformation in and amongst his cranial arterial system like an undiscovered aneurysm that made this just a tragic unfortunate situation not connected to the game.

It was never in the cards for my boys...they were late bloomers physically. Instead they ran Cross-Country, worst injury was shin splints to the youngest.

Football ten years from now: will new rule changes dramatically change the game? Will big swaths of higher income areas cancel teams? Will Soccer and Lacrosse take over in these areas? Will the sport only stay popular in rural and southern areas?
My son was a real good athlete. He excelled at all sports. He was recruited by his friend's dad to play Pop Warner. The parent's acted as coaches. Because he was a little bigger than the other kids he was put on the line. Instead of teaching him how to block and tackle, the coaches had hitting drills. He would come home with bruises all over. The coach's kids all played the skill positions even though my son was the best athlete on the team.

My son only played the one year of football. Every year when I read about a young kid dying of a football injury, I say a little "thank you" to the Pop Warner coaches.
