CFB playoff thread

So it's basically 2-loss, conference champion OSU vs 1-loss Bama for the final spot. The committee showed us how they would make that call last year when it came down to PSU vs OSU, even though PSU had the H2H in that case.

Is there any realistic chance that it's not 1 Clemson, 2 Oklahoma, 3 UGA, 4 Alabama, 5 OSU? The only switch I could see is UGA/OU in seeding, not that it really matters.

I think it’s OSU over Bama. 1) the big will not get left out and the SEC will not get two in while leaving the big out. 2) it’ll be rationalized by SOS.

Clemson
Oklahoma
Georgia
OSU

I made a note to myself a month ago to bump this thread. People doubted Ohio State. They have a solid chance of getting in.

I was one of those adamant that OSU didn't have a chance to get in. Congratulations. You win the message board. I was going to come on here and fess up today that I was wrong. Waiting for a month to bump this - not too sad.

Let’s shock the world. USC in, Ohio State and Alabama out. Everyone wins.

Everyone is allowed one blowout loss right? At least USC’s was to a better team.

Stop milking this damn thing.

What a sheet show. Tell everybody that the rankings will be released at 12 and then do it 30 minutes later.

The only way osu gets in is if the B10 commish is politicking and making calls.

Those two decisive losses were always gonna be too much to overcome. OSU was ranked 8th for a reason and were always on the outside looking in.

Yeah, All P5 conferences should be rep'd, its only a matter of time before the ACC is left out. Also, would like to see a scenario where a G5 can get in if they meet certain criteria. I know that UCF wouldn't be able to beat any of the top 4 this year, but at 13-0 I'd like to see them get a shot.

That's why you play the games.

G5 P5 conference champions and 6 wildcard teams. Best way I know of to remove the human element. Think this current systems sucks ass.

I think it has to be this or do the G5/P5 champions + 2 wild cards and give the top 4 teams byes (just like the NFL).

But how would that remove the human element? You would still have humans making the decision of which bubble teams get the wild card spots.

True. But the decision process for those 6 wild card berths can be quantified to a certain degree. Maybe take 6 conference runner-ups with the best records. Certainly better than what is in place now, or previously.

I'm just worried about watering down the college football regular season which is one of the great treasures in all of sports.

Too many games. Cut it at 8 teams. P5 Champs and 3 at large.

Don't like "at large" because of the human element, and include the G5 teams because I'd really like to see the match ups.

But do we really want teams like Florida Atlantic and Toledo in the playoff? They each played one ranked team this year, and lost handily. How are they deserving?

No unless CFB went to a 16 team playoff.
Then I would give all 11 conferences a bid and then 5 at-large bids

You can't eliminate the human element. It's impossible to objectively quantify results with so many teams playing such different schedules.

While you cannot eliminate the human element, you can limit its effect on the overall process. By placing the human element at wild card games, the conference champs are already included and the committee is looking at less appealing teams (typically teams outside the top four).

Besides, if the playoffs started this weekend, they would be complete in four weeks. Use the lesser bowls to fill in the off days during the weeks.

Just a quick suggestion to show it can work.

While I agree with your point as things stand now, it would be less easy for the P5 to ignore the G5 threats because they would need the SOS. The powers would still need to avoid pansy OOC scheduling to rack up wins. Would Wiscy get a sniff of the playoffs this year? They have no quality wins while UCF has two (both Memphis, but Memphis was ranked). Simply scheduling body bag games would be tempered a bit. Not to mention, the G5 would be able to recruit a little better by offering better players more playing time with a chance at the playoffs as opposed to riding the pine for 1-3 years and then getting a "shot" at playing time.

Regardless, if a Toledo or FAU with no quality wins gets in, they are likely to be seeded in the 15-16 range and the top2 teams would have the easy games. However, UCF would be ranked higher and have a better shot at an upset win.

After week one, the real games start and just like in hops, a really hot team can go deep in the playoffs.

Just my two cents.
