It seems like the kid has been unfairly written off by a good chunk of the fan base.

I've heard that we "wasted" a scholarship on him, especially after not getting Bryant, and his name was thrown around a lot during the transfer discussions. He's not being afforded the same patience as someone like Kaleb, despite being a freshman big man (which tend to take more time to develop).

In very limited (and unexpected) minutes last year, I thought he showed solid poise, rebounding and passing skills for a young guy. And more importantly, he's got a good frame. I don't see any reason why he can't add 20 lbs. and continue to evolve into an impact player (mostly in terms of defense and rebounding) for us.

I think his ceiling is a Jeremy McNeil type of role. Play physical and use his fouls while he is in there to give the zone some teeth. Anything above and beyond that is gravy.

I'll admit, I'm down on him. The little bit of time he got last season late, it was clear that the team did not trust him to touch the ball at all on offense. We talk about playing 4 on 5, but in his case, I worry if he ever puts a shot up its an accident.

He can prove me wrong. Guys get better. I knew he was raw, but he was even more so than I had expected.

Yeah, I think you're probably right. Although, because of our current situation, we desperately need a guy anchoring the center position who can produce right away. Chino could eventually turn into a solid backup for us, but he's a project. We just can't afford to have projects.

he's a poor mans BMK. I just don't think given the schollie situation that we can chew one up there

That's very fair. And there's no doubt that he could, in fact, turn out to be a solid reserve.

I think most of the criticism stems from the concern that given our scholarship reduction / roster limitations, that having one spot taken up by a guy who isn't "better" is something we can't afford right now.

Nothing would please me more than for Chino to emerge as a valuable contributor. I think he's got the physical tools to be able to do so, if his skill level / instincts catch up. But that's no guarantee. And with Patterson / BJ leaving, Chino is the only logical guy on the roster to potentially follow them out the door to clear space if better prospects want to sign up.

At the moment it doesn't appear that we have anyone else to take the scholarship. I assume you aren't suggesting that we jettison him and then go full out for a guy we haven't been recruiting?

Chino was not a Freshman last year. It was his second year in the system and although he didn't see any action his freshman year, his minutes this past year have to be looked at as mildly disappointing. With that said, next year will be his third in the system and we should expect him to contribute more than he did this past year, although I'm not expecting much. I would take a comparison to BMK as AZOrange suggested, but echoing his sentiment, that's not good enough given our situation. I hope he proves to be a high energy reserve that can eat up minutes and not be a liability on offense.

Obokoh's slow. But he showed good fundamentals and decent poise. I predict he'll be our starting center in seven months.

Do you see Coleman being ready at the beginning of the season?

As an offensive rebounder, screen setter and a free dunk or two off a defender leaving him I think he could give us good minutes. The problem is his reaction time in the middle of the zone is really bad. Dashonte Riley bad. The moment he is forced to adjust as the ball is moving from one side to the other he tends to lose himself and then frequently ends up fouling the guy cutting into the space where he should be defending.

I think that really becomes the key for Chino. If his reaction time and presence on D improves dramatically he can give us some good minutes maybe even 10-15 a game depending on how durable DaJuan can be. We should be in a situation where in order to preserve DC2 we will see Chino playing big minutes in blowouts ( hopefully we have some) along with Diagne getting experience playing minutes at the 5 as well.

Actually he's more like a poor man's Dave Siock (for those who remember 1990-93). 6'10 240. Big. Slow. Career 1.9 ppg/ 1.8 rpg.

JB and the staff picked him for a reason. Time will tell but I have faith in the staff's judgement and I think Chino has more to offer than most folks here have given him credit for. He certainly has a higher Basketball IQ than Fab did. He seems to have better hands than Baye had. I know that may not be saying much... but hey, it's a start.

One thing is nearly certain and that's we'll need him to some degree for sure and perhaps ( if circumstances turn downward for any of a variety of reasons) quite a bit. I'm hoping he shows a substantive jump in his playing prowess this coming season.

I want to believe in and root for all our players. Chino needs to really step up. Compared to what Christmas did this season he's a tough act to follow!

Does anyone know what the status is on his NCAA appeal of the NCAA taking away one of Chino's years of eligibility. How many years of elegibility does he have left 2 or 3?

That's a low bar! My cat... nevermind.

We heard like that about Andy Rautins for the best part of three years ...

How many years, Andy?

haven't heard anything about his appeal. Was wondering if maybe the coaches would prefer he not redshirt so they can get to a big time recruit sooner…

Rautins played in 35 games as a soph and scored 252 points. Chino played 7% of all possible minutes and wasn't allowed to touch the ball.

They're not remotely the same and frankly a lot of people over exaggerate Rautins hatred.

Right.
