Chris McCullough dismissed from Brewster

Here's the Brewster rule on expulsion (emphasis added).

A cursory reading suggests the potential for big problems because he will not be able to get his diploma.

Disciplinary Expulsion:
generally occurs when a student on disciplinary probation commits another offense and it is the school’s judgment the student’s attendance should end, or when the student’s conduct on a first offense is such that, in the judgment of the head of school or his designee, the student cannot remain a member of the community. Expulsion is given for extremely serious misconduct when it is the judgment of the school that the student should not be permitted to continue as a student at the school. An expulsion will result in forfeiture of the academic credits for the trimester in which the expulsion occurs. The school will not permit the student to complete work at home and will not facilitate measures to see that the student completes the trimester or the year. The student will not be eligible for a Brewster diploma. (Expulsion requires administrative review, which consists of consultation with appropriate members of the administration and approval by the head of school and may be altered, deferred, or suspended only by the head of school) Expelled students shall not be allowed on campus without the express permission of the dean of students.

We are now selective enough that we can, and should, give greater weight to character. It is time that we get away from these messes. They can never be prevented but they can be limited.

There are two ways of interpreting Chris's response: he is being a man, or he is in denial.

None of us know what happened but we cannot be certain that the event was just boys will be boys. I with hold judgment but caution that character should become more important in recruiting.

This whole saga is only going to cause greater chaos next year (if he is on the team) when the ncaa decides mid-season to hold him out of games.

What he does in highschool outside of academics will have no bearing on his time at syracuse. It never has in the past for ncaa schools anyway, and Mccullough is a one and done nba talent. If he did something really, really, illegal brewster would have turned him in on their own best interests.

It was done on the weekend whatever it was. Probably kids having fun. He tweeted a few hours ago first person I want to see is my niece and he is an adult now, makes me wonder if he is father now.

I have to disagree here completely. The NCAA will be sniffing around Chris for the rest of his high school career, and most likely his one and only year in college.

They won't be hiring investigators to follow our kids around now just because they play college basketball.

A few things concern me now:
• Chris said he's not going to reveal the reason for the dismissal. I would imagine that if it were me, and i felt the offense was relatively minor, i'd want to explain myself. By saying "it's in the past" and that it's going to remain a 'secret,' that sorta makes it seem pretty significant.
• I would hope the SU staff would be privy to the information before accepting the LOI, but with JB's track record, i don't want to speculate about the level of criminality that would get the 'heck no' sign from JB.
• Since this is Chris' final year at Brewster, we don't really have a sense that this offense may have been the type of thing that would result in a ONE year expulsion with an opportunity to come back next year, or if it was a "no effin' way you're ever coming back" kind of thing. I had a friend at SU who did something stupid with the elevator at Lawrinson, and got a one-year suspension. It was stupid, but not so bad that it warranted a 'lifetime ban' kind of thing. He came back the next year and that was that.
• We haven't been informed that Chris was among other students who were dismissed. A 'solo act' seems much more on the 'scary' side to me. I don't want to let my mind wander into that area, but...

I don't, though, see a conflict between his tweet about 'being a man' and dealing with it, versus exposing this to everyone. I'm not so much a believer in the whole 'public figure' = a necessity for public exposure in all facets of a person's life. I want to know. I don't believe i have the right to know.

Let's not forget this is high school, not college, and the school substitutes as "parents" for all the students. So they have to set rules and follow the rules. According to the handbook if he had a 2nd incident that leads to expulsion. He could have been drinking a Bud light like our football kicker, and did it a 2nd time, and that would lead to expulsion. I don't really need to worry about the reason. No criminal charges...it was something minor like that. Trust me, we all did the things our senior year in h.s. that could have led to his being kicked out.

I find it interesting that almost everyone here is overwhelming ready to exonerate him and excuse whatever it is he did without even knowing what it was. People are more worried about whether he can still be eligible for next season than they are whether this is a sign that this kid shouldn't be part of our program.

I am not against giving kids a second chance, but (i) we have had too much drama in recent years, to not at least ask the question what are we setting ourselves up for here and (ii) we are not at a point in our program's development where we need to take a top recruit just because he is willing to come....there are other guys that we can and should recruit if a particular guy is unable to keep his nose clean.

Boys will be boys was fine when we were settling for guys outside the top 100, but those days are gone. Who wants this guy if he is going to end up being another mid-season or pre-NCAA tourney suspension. I'm not saying that he will be, but I think as fans we ought to at least be asking ourselves that question.

But that's also assuming he did something really, really bad. It very well may have been something minor. So what's the point of crucifying him without knowing the facts? We don't know one way or the other, so it seems the people jumping on the "we don't need punks!" are rushing to judgment at least as quickly as the "hopefully it's behind him" people.

I'm anxiously looking forward to Francis' thoughts on this matter and where McCullough may literally and figuratively go from here. What about Buss' prep school? Maybe that's a possible destination?
Don't know what he did at this point but I'm sure it had to be something serious for him to get the boot. Hopefully this serves as a learning experience and he'll make better judgments moving forward. He doesn't have a reputation of being a bad kid or a trouble maker, so I won't be quick to judge him until I hear all of the facts. As pointed out already he did think about reclassifying into 2013, but would've came up a few credits short. I would assume as long as he finds a school to enroll in quickly he should still be on track to qualify since he didn't have a long ways to go. I think he'll eventually end up at a school in NY/NJ/CT.

Thanks, Francis. Maybe Ennis could help get him set up at St. Benedict's?

No I disagree. What we know is that he has been kicked out of school. You don't typically get kicked out of school because you are a boy scout. No one is saying crucify him, but maybe we ought not be looking to simply ignore that he was kicked out of school.

I'm not saying we should ignore it. But it could be something like getting caught smoking weed, and they might have strict rules against that. I saw Outside Providence, I know how these things work. Poor Amy Smart got kicked out for that very thing.

I'm just saying, it does us no good to either say we should wash our hands of him or celebrate and forgive him until we know what happened, and chances are we will never know what actually happened.

Yeah I think a school like St. Benedict's or Life Center(Waiters) out in Jersey are most likely being looked at. Biggest issue obviously will be if any of these schools are willing to accept him.

Syracuse knows exactly what happened and it's not going to effect his recruitment. He's a young kid that made a mistake. He just needs to find a school to accept him and everything will be fine

I've got an extra bedroom and bath if he's interested in playing for Fairport HS in Rochester. I'm sure they could find a spot in the lineup for him.

His future at SU will be determined by the answers to the following two questions:

1. Did McCullough murder, rape or maim someone? If answer is "no," proceed to question #2.

2. Is he qualified? If answer is "yes," welcome to The Hill Mstr. McCullough.

I think that may be a recruiting violation. One that the NCAA will pick up next spring at tournament time. Just in time to suspend him from the team, lol!!!
