Chris Mullin weighs in on Zone Busting

it's a tremendous advantage to be able to play both and not just one exclusively. and how just how many ncaa championships in the last 30 years have been won by teams playing only zone? there are reasons to learn man.

The problem from a coaches perspective is everyone is always second guessing the coaches decision when to change, not change, or after changing.

It's been allowed in the NBA for 14 years now. Just can't be in the paint for 3 seconds.

right. College zone is illegal in the pros. Notice how Nova stifled Miami with a match up zone tonight? It's catching on!

Zone isn't catching on, it's been a big part of college basketball for a long time. And no, it's not illegal and hasn't been for a long time, you just can't stay in the paint on defense for more than 3 seconds.

Watch some Tark UNLV teams and look at the defense, very similar to what we play and long before we went to it exclusively.

The zone is a defense built for the tourney. You confuse teams that just aren't used to seeing one implemented by a team with decent atheletes and size. Its usually a defense to hide deficiencies.

While great in the tourney, I find it frustrating in conference play where opposing coaches get multiple looks at it and have many opportunities to poke holes in it. It was the same thing in the big east .

When did Jay Wright start going zone? And what happens when a NBA defender stays in the lane for 3 seconds or more? It is a violation. Ergo, illegal.

Huh? What does Jay Wrights use of the zone have to do with the history of the zone defense? Less teams are playing it now than they did in the 90s. What's your point?

I don't get what you're trying to do, but no, the zone is not illegal in the NBA and hasn't been in over a decade, "ergo" not illegal.

I know it's tourney time so I'm assuming you're drunk.

I know you're argumentative, so I will indulge you. Prove it, that the zone is now used less. I would love to see the data.

It is illegal for a NBA center, or any defender for that matter to stay in the lane for 3 seconds or more. Why is that so hard to understand?

Yup. But they called it the "ameoba" and Tark chewed a towel and Larry Johnson had a gold tooth, so it was "aggressive". They call ours a "2-3" which fat scrubs at the Y play and our coach rests his head in his chin on the bench, so we "sit in the zone". It's all narrative. Most sports fans have no idea what they're actually watching. They just like to know and repeat the narrative.

I'm argumentative? It's a fact that zone defense used to be illegal in the NBA and it hasn't been illegal for over a decade and teams have played zone in the NBA.

Zone defense = LEGAL in the NBA, far from banned.

Just because your panties are all twisted up because your wrong doesn't mean you have to backtrack and resort to passive aggressive behavior. Be a man and step up. You probably haven't watched an NBA game in 15 years and really don't have any sort of clue of the game as you probably don't go outside of your Syracuse bubble. It's not your fault but you just don't have a clue.

You nailed it. We play almost to a T what those teams did and it's a EXTREMELY aggressive zone. I think a bunch of our teams have played it better than the Tark teams but Tark did a heck of a job with the defense. Watch the video, not many differences between their defense and ours.

If by narrative you mean that JB is the best zone coach in college basketball over the last 20 years then yes, I am on board with that. You?

Can a player dribble the basketball with both hands? Nope, it's illegal. Can a player carry the ball down the court? Nope, it's illegal. Can a player tackle an opponent? Nope, it's illegal. Can a NBA defender stand in the paint for 3 seconds or more? See where I am going with this? College zone is illegal in the pros. When your little yellow bus arrives in the morning, you can share this lesson with your driver.

I really don't care about narratives. Narratives are what led to me having to listen to the announcers verbally fellate Aaron Craft for 2 hours about his leadership and his brother in the army or something while I was trying to watch my Orangemen play an elite 8 game against Ohio State in 2012. Not a big fan of narratives.

But yes, I agree that Boeheim has had the best zone in college basketball over the last 20 years or so(at some point he surpassed John Chaney), as far as I know on the large stage( I have little interest in watching everybody, like I used to).

I know all about Tark, and John Chaney. Those are great examples, of course. I do not have the delusion that Boeheim invented the zone. But when you see a strict man to man guy like Jay Wright playing a match up zone and destroying a good team like Miami with it, it's easy to make the connection with today's master.

You pretty blatantly said zone defense was outlawed NBA which is false.

I don't get what you're talking about with the double dribling and your other the useless BS your brought up as its irrelivent. You said zone was banned in the NBA, I simply said it was legal and had been for over a decade but you had to be a crybaby and go on some unknown tangent.

I won't even get on your form in the jump shot your taking in your picture.

I suggest you educate yourself on basketball, you might then not put your foot in your mouth about calling something outlawed when it's been legal for over a decade.

It just couldn't be a good coach making smart decisions? It had to be the great master Boeheim to have a hand in Novas win. You're more clueless and self absorbed with this program than one could even imagine.

Oh, I get it. You're THAT guy. Show me where I used the words banned, or outlawed. I'll give you$1k if you can find them. Your insults don't camouflagey your ignorance and anger very well.

As you can see from the post above you clearly said it was outlawed. You can donate the 1k to CTO, I'm sure she'll give it to a wonderful cause in the name of syracusefan.com. Please be a man of your word. There's only one ignorant person in this thread, it's the person who doesn't have a clue remembering his own jibberish.

not to mention, there is a good reason it is outlawed at the professional level.

Do I qualify for the 1K?

Yes, you do.

Are you prepared to admit that college zone is illegal in the NBA?

Zone is zone, and zone is legal in college and it's legal in the NBA. It's not banned, it's not outlawed, it's legal. I've never heard the term "college zone" or "NBA zone" until you said it and doubt I'll hear it again. I've heard of a 2-3 zone and many variations of numbers equaling 5 with the word zone at the end and the term matchup zone which I've seen used in both college and the NBA but never heard of the term "college zone". You thought you were being smart by saying zone was outlawed in the NBA but you I'm willing to bet you haven't followed the NBA regularly in well over a decade and you got caught talking about something you don't have a clue about and somebody you don't like called you out and made you look dumb and now you're back tracking. It's fine, it happens, don't cry over spilled milk and do your homework next time. Pretty simple.

This debate is like listening to two drunks arguing at the bar - it's obvious what point you're both trying to make, and neither of you is going to concede because from the perspective you're taking you're both "right"...so how about you stop because you're both looking more like fools than brilliant debaters.

His first post made zero mention of a "college zone" it made a blanket statement that zone was outlawed in the NBA which all I did was point out it wasn't. He's the one who back tracked and "adjusted" his words. He just didn't have a clue what he as talking about until he was called out.
