Obviously we'd rather have the extra practices than not. But consider that recently every season following a bowl, and those precious extra practices, has been worse than the one before it: 2011 (8-5 to 5-7), 2013 (8-5 to 7-6), 2014 (7-6 to 4-8). Heck go even further back: 2005 (6-6 to 1-10), 2002 (10-3 to 4-8), 2000 (7-5 to 6-5).
There are other factors at play of course but the extra practice isn't some magic elixir that guarantees improvement.
