Civilization is finally coming to Connecticut...

Anyone you lives in the Capital Region knows about some myyhical/non-mythical handshake agreement between Danny Wegman (or his dad) and Neil Golub. It sucks there is no Wegmans, but there is a very strong supermarket presence among Price Chopper/Market 32, Hannaford, Aldi, Trader Joe's, Fresh Market and Whole Foods. Plus some pretty decent Italian markets, Fish markets, Meat markets, Florists, Bakeries and Sam's Club, BJ's and of course the Walmart groceries. And Costco will be here in a year.

Wegman's prices were high 30 and 40 yeas ago. That never stopped them from becoming the juggernaut they are. What Wegmans offers is convenience, selection and a clean and well stocked store. Something that you can't always find in one place in the Capital Region. And I'm a huge Price Chopper guy. Been shopping there since it was Central Markets and my Mom would walk there and I would tag along on my tricycle. But Wegmans would definitely take a good market share from them and everyone else.

agreed . but they seem to be pushing out the name brands to sell their own stuff.
more and more i'm amazed to find what you can't find there.

This. When I was a kid we'd drive down from Phoenix to the Dewitt Wegman's because they "had everything." It felt like a superstore; the 5th Avenue of groceries in one building.

Now I go there and we can't even find the iced tea my wife likes.

On the plus side, I've ran into both JW and Red there.

I shop at Wegman's all the time and I do like it better than most but certainly won't miss it that much when I leave Ithaca in a few years. Their meat is probably the weakest link in the store.

I used to be willing to pay higher prices for meat at Wegmans because it was better quality than anywhere else I could go. The first time I went into the Wegmans in Lancaster, all I saw was the same pre-packaged meat I can get at Weis or Giant at a higher cost. The one thing I think Wegmans has is incredible consistency - they don’t have “bad” stores like other chains. They are the Budweiser of supermarkets - what you are getting isn’t the best, but you know with absolute certainty what you are getting.

i hit the one near cicero when the lexus needs service . less and less impressed every visit. although the wife likes the MARSHALLS next door.

When my family goes to the Berkshires each summer, a highlight for me is to go to Market 32. Not sure what that says about me.

As a Brooklyn resident, we don’t have huge supermarkets. There is a Wegman’s but it’s on the opposite side of the borough. Market 32 has seemingly everything.

I'm old enough to remember when Price Chopper kept most of their products in boxes on the shelves. The stores were kind of grungy and people smoked while in the store.

The Market 32 on Rt 50 in Saratoga had a spot where you could get a beer to drink while shopping, and all the carts had a little drink holder. (I’d assume still have it, but I haven’t lived there in years). So I don’t know if they have everything - but they had what is important.

When I'm in Syracuse during the Summer and go to Wegmans in Fayetteville I have always found the service and friendliness of the employees there to be subpar. Many times I've stopped at the service desk on the way out and told an employee there - if you want to know what good service is in a supermarket -- visit Publix in Florida. Way way better. And friendlier. I've never understood why people rave about Wegmans.
I’ve been to Publix. Felt like a glorified Walmart.

I think the one in Latham still has a sitting area to have a beer or two while eating from one of their prepared food to go areas. After seeing how some people maneuver their shopping carts, I think they have more than one or two.

Clifton Park doesn't have the sitting area, but you can get your growlers filled from a couple different options.

Wegmans is fine. Their flagship stores are better stocked than the regular ones. There are features in Fayetteville that you aren’t going to find on Rt 31 or John Glenn.

I’ll go to Vince’s or Spera’s, or Nichols occasionally. At the last two there will be moments of, oh I remember that. Tops and Aldi, meh.

Publix is very good, but I’ll go to Doris Italian if I’m spending extended time in South Florida

Publix is fine. Much better baked goods than Walmart. But my comparison with Wegmans is I find the service at Publix far superior. For prices on basic products I go to Walmart. And for produce, I find Trader Joe's & Fresh Market better than the others. When I'm in Syracuse I first get what I can at Trader Joe's on Erie Blvd. E.

Publix is hands down the cleanest grocery store I’ve ever seen. Don’t get me wrong Wegman’s is a great store but not as clean as Publix. Both these stores are overpriced but quality costs.

ive also found myself going to specialty stores like Lombardis. Vinces, etc for certain items.

We are a wegmans family going back. I worked there, my sister, my brother works for their corporate offices. It has gone downhill with all of the Wegmans brand stuff. I never realized it until you go to a store like Green Hills and they have stuff I completely forgot about that Wegmans doesnt even carry. The meat is meh, seafood is so-so. Prepared foods are way overpriced. Subs suck. Its still better that most stores especially when you are comparing it to places like Food Lion but its not what it once was for sure.

Green Hills for baked goods, fried chicken/fish, great deli.
Price Chopper for the best seafood and affordable quality meats.

Wegman's produce is very good.

Liehs & Steigerwald for sausages. Mazzye's meats is very good beef.

Vince's, Lombardi's, Asia Market, Indian Bazaar, Oasis, Samir's on Genesee St - all of those places are great for imported ingredients.

I've been in there a few times (Trader Joe's), and it seems like they have a lot of their own prepared foods, too. Which do you recommend? They have all sorts of frozen Chinese food and stuff like that, right? I once got MacIntosh Apple Juice there, and it most certainly was - not a blend.

They have some great frozen food of their own. And it changes often so you never know what you're going to find. My absolute favorite is their frozen Joe's Diner Mac 'n Cheese with 4 cheeses. I also like their breaded fish sticks & use an air fryer. And frozen salmon burgers. I usually get most of my fresh vegetables there & particularly like their compari tomatoes and fresh scallions which are packaged in a way I've never seen in a regular supermarket. They have a variety of their own ice cream & sorbet. For fresh foods my favorite is their cod. But walking through the frozen section is always a nice adventure. Good luck & enjoy. Yes, to Chinese food but I've rarely taken to frozen prepared Chinese food & I've found some interesting frozen Indian food. There are a number of very good Chinese restaurants in the Syracuse area, something I can not get at all in South Florida. I love Szechuan Chinese & Red Chili on Erie Blvd East is very good.

When Wegman's moved into northern VA 10-12 years ago, it was an event. People were there many hours before they opened. They opened many more stores in metro DC now, and each time it is an event. Their wine section is great.

I really do love Wegman's, but they are pricier and they are simply too big for quick picking things up. Going there requires a plan or you will be there all day. But they make you smile and happy !

hit fayetteville monday am on way home . when i'm shopping i like to browse about. take my time. see what stuff i can't find locally. but seems like whenever i'm in WeGMAN;S the OLDSTERS ( hey i'm 65) with their shopping carts are on a search and destroy mission.
zero courtesy. basically run you over. like they got 3 hours left to live . bump or push me again. well maybe baby . and here's a CLUE. murder weapon ? frozen goose. location ? aisle 7 . culprit ? tbonezone. ( i did buy a frozen goose . don't see them locally . got friends coming next weekend . never cooked one before . i know they're greasy . any tips appreciated. )
