out of the Top 10 in the college football playoff rankings. Let's assume this committee gets that right. And while it is rare indeed to drop so far in the CFP rankings it may reflect more on this committee's judgment than Clemson itself. This Tiger team has yet to shine all season.
Bama too should drop out of the CFP Top 10. They eked out a win against a Texas team that so far has shown itself to be a good workman type team, but then struggled against Texas A&M (3-6) the week before losing in Knoxville to the Vols. In that game Bama had 17 penalties for 130 yards, and the Bama defense had no answers allowing the Vols to rack up 567 total yards and score a whopping 52 points.
Yesterday Georgia's defense shined against the Vols holding them to just 289 yards of total offense and only 13 points. Georgia will surely be #1 in this weeks CFP rankings. Georgia's offense did struggle some in the second half though scoring just 3 points which is a bit of a head-scratcher. Did Kirby call off the Dogs a bit or is Georgia's offense perhaps something to be a little concerned about?
I expect the Vols to respond and win out with three games remaining against Missouri, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt. But the Vols' road the the SEC championship game has suddenly become more murky than a drive through the great Smoky Mountains in heavy fog. And their signature win against Bama while impressive isn't nearly as impressive as so many wanted to believe.
Michigan had a nice day. They scored TDs in the red zone after some had criticized them for opting for too many field goals so far this season, and like an elite team they dominated the third quarter and ran away with the game on the road. Not only that but their previous opponent and in-state rival Michigan State, who Michigan dominated last week but did not blow out winning 29-7 which some questioned, went on the road and beat one-loss Illinois. Sparty was down 6 players due to suspension and also played banged up with several injuries including a few during the game and still looked impressive pulling off the upset in Champaign. That Sparty performance should reflect well on the Wolverines. Moreover, Penn State, who has been undervalued all season, dominated on the road yesterday once again showing that they have one of the best defenses in the country notwithstanding the beatdown they incurred against the the Wolverines.
Ohio State picked up the W against a bad Northwestern team in windy conditions north of downtown Chicago. I think everyone expected more from the Buckeyes yesterday in the Windy city, but given everything else that happened in college football yesterday and how explosive this committee considers the Buckeye offense to be I expect them to remain in the CFP Top 4 and rightfully so.
TCU is in a strong position to make the playoff. One hopes this CFP committee eats some crow and ranks TCU after Georgia, Ohio State, and Michigan in the #4 slot. I believe TCU earned that ranking for sure.
Are the Vols #5 or #6? How far does LSU jump after winning at home against a Bama team that is of course good but for some reason hasn't been all that impressive this season?
Actually based on this CFP committee's initial ranking decisions this season (putting Clemson at #4 ??) and also how the CFP committees in the past have voted I will not be shocked if this CFP committee has either the Vols at #4 or instead makes an even bolder decision and moves a 2-loss LSU team to the #4 position. Either of those decisions would be another massive mistake from this committee and one would hope that they have been humbled enough with the Clemson snafu to keep their biases more at bay.
One thing is for certain, expanding the college football playoffs to 8 teams will/would be great for college football.
