The NBA is a zillion times more popular than college football in New York, a zillion. In many parts of the South, all you have are your college teams. Up North we have a lot more options because there are so many professional franchises concentrated up here. So pro sports, aka the highest level of play w/ the best athletes regardless of the sport, is just far more intriguing for the average Northerner. It's really that simple.
