Close Game Last Night: Tell me how it was JJ Starlings Fault

Freeman can and should shoot open 3s. It's his soft game inside, or trying turnaround fade aways or not posting up that has to change
He's best used in PNR at the top of the key. Pick and pop for an open 3. Otherwise, like you said, operate in the paint or high post. Don't worry, Red will fix this.

He graded out as the worst defender of all the starters. Outside of the FT’s offensively he was fine.

Exactly this. His defense is what it is and what it always will be. That's a known constant.

He did limit his FGAs and the 3PT he made was within the system and catch and shoot. I actually very much appreciate that he only took 6 FGAs and only one of them was a three. Honestly,

His FT shooting hitch looks like he was shooting FTs for the first time in his life. It's really worrisome. When you airball multiple FTs, your in a bad headspace.

I do think his starting mucked up things a bit in terms of chemistry, but there was a lot of blame to go around.

Kiyan, at one point, missed three shots at the rim (to be fair, the first attempt looked like goaltending). Then he went 1-4 on one trip at the FT line. Donnie hit a bunch of FTs, but def wasn't locked in the full game.

And Red has some really odd substitution patterns.

So JJ had some good (limited FGAs, efficient scoring, playing within the system) and some bad (the FTs are a legit worry), but it was a group effort.

I Agree. The FTs did much to change the game. But if the ref doesnt go crazy with the 1st call and we make the T the other way thats a 3-6 pt swing and maybe the game instead of being 10-14 is 18-20 and never in doubt.
No diss on Kiyan but our best free throw shooter should take our technicals and currently that’s Freeman. (was he in the game at the time? I don’t recall) Our best free throw shooter should be rewarded by taking them, not a time to try to build confidence in a shaky free throw shooter even if he was doing better in practice. Just my opinion. I’m certain they have been working on their free throw shooting in practice but these players have to motivate themselves to work on them seriously on their own too to build their own confidence or they will mentally freak or avoid situations where they may need to go to the line. We’re encouraging teams to foul us otherwise as a defensive strategy. Someday soon Kiyan may actually be a player we want at the line in crucial situations,

I think they fact he was going to shoot 4 in a row most teams would send any decent shooter to the line.

I also wonder if it was an attempt to get him focused.

Monmouth, despite their record was the best ream by far we have played. Lots of talent on that team, they play hard and King Rice is a pretty good coach. They will have success in their league this season.

Yes I wish we had played better but a win is a win. Free throws bothered me and that definitely needs to be cleaned up

And if Freeman shoots anymore threes this season I will lose my mind
Yes I wish we had played better but a win is a win.

It could not be said any better - the entire team was OFF last night - 'cept George and probably some will disagree with me on him.

They have a good team and will win some games just not in Syracuse.

FT shooting has to get better!

My thread title is tongue in cheek. I am a pretty big Starling supporter. But after smoking 3 teams with strong defense, only one major change came in the lineup last night...

My son had a school concert last night. I only know box scores, haven't had a chance to watch.

I did see that Justin Ray, he of the 8.7 scoring average and a season high points of 16, went off for 25 and made four 3s and shot 9 foul shots.

Is that all on JJ?
Nothing was Starling's fault - he's just back from a hammy - although that air ball free throw wasn't very special.

We actually shot very well. If you look at the stats, we shot 54.3% from 2 and 41.2% from 3. Our free throw % was very poor 19/33 or 57.6%. Our rebounding is still an issue despite out rebounding them by 1. That Torres kid played only 22 minutes and had 8 rebounds being tied with a teammate for top rebounders over Freeman and Kyle, our top rebounders with 7. Of course missing 14 free throws gave Monmouth probably 14 more chances for a rebound.

We outshot them, beat them in blocks, had more assists than Monmouth but they had 4 more steals than us and had more points off our 12 turnovers (3 more points) than we did off their 12 turnovers. (18 vs 15) If you look at the stats you’d think we won by more than we did - the extra possessions and lost points that they got from our missed free throws helped close the gap. They took advantage of our miscues.

The turnover issue and points-off-turnover differential is a great point to make. I noticed that as well and pointed it out. Syracuse feasted off turnovers and fast breaks for the past three games (and that was historically how the program thrived for 4 decades), but we didn’t last night for some reason, even though Monmouth came in as a team that turned the ball over frequently. What happened? Part of it was our lack of energy and aggression on defense. But also Red failed to turn up the full court pressure in the second half, perhaps out of concerns about a number of key players being in foul trouble (because of the awful refereeing).

We were turning them over in the first half.

For whatever reason, that switched in the second, and we ended that half having more TO's than the Hawks did. (but still fewer for the game)

The Hawks have/had been turning it over A LOT.
And I think they finished at or slightly below their season average.
Which is pretty disappointing - given that's supposedly something our D was good at.

Not breaking any major news here, but -
we aren't remotely as good on D as our stats against 3 moldy cupcakes led people to believe.
